Rotary Potentiometer

Hi Chaps,
I need to replace the potentiometer that monitors the lift arms on my Merlo, unfortunately Merlo price is £500 and they are out of stock. I had a quick search online with no luck. Does anyone know what these numbers mean as it looks like i am going to have to find something similar to do the job.

Looks like MCB is now part of Vishay who make lots of electronic components.

In fairness the lift arms of a Merlo are going to be up and down many times in a working day, and probably in a harsh environment. An 'ordinary' £2 pot isn't going to last 5 minutes in that sort of service.

At over thirty quid, for a £2 potentiometer? I would likely buy a £2 version and make/modify a suitable holder! £500 is just extracting the urine!!

Be grateful. I bought three for a Cologne 2.9i at £70 each or thereabouts. All were faulty, only diagnosed when I fitted an original secondhand one.

Thanks, Yes that is the one i have found, I cant seem to find any information on the 419 XXX potentiometers not sure what the last 3 digits represent. I could do with the original spec to work from.

I'd be buying at least two cheapies and mounting both next to each other....if one packs up u just need to plug the second one in...

just to say....
in the early days of rallying we used a Kenlowe cooling fan......the therm cooling fan switch had a sticker over the moulded info on the switch body.....
which said if u remove this sticker the warrenty is void....
they reg went wrong, Kenlowe charged £40 for a £10 part from the elec wholesalers.......

My Isuzu trooper 4 wheel drive selector switch * mechanical / vacuum* was mounted on the front of the front axle.....always getting bashed....
gen replacement was £200 odd squids......found a direct replacement from China for a tenner......

Biggest challenge will be keeping water/crud out of the cheap potentiometer, they are a bit exposed on machines.

Do you have or know where to have access to the workshop service manual for that beast including most importantly the schematics for the electronics systems?

AS said 419216 is as close as I can find, MCB were OEM suppliers then bought out.
So is there a replacement part ??

What's the range of movement?

As already mentioned, the cheap ones meant for volume control etc won't be robust enough. Throttle body pot is one possibility but the range of movement will only be 90° or so.

There is every chance that the 419230 is the Merlo part number.

Are you able to measure any resistances of the old potentiometer, or has it completely failed?

Apparently VISHAY have taken over MCB potentiometers. The VISHAY Part number is PMR421D392094WC230. I cant find anyone with stock and finding an alternative is not proving as easy as it could be. Hopefully one of the VISHAY distributers will get back to me.
As for testing the one i have. I am no expert but I think this is FUBAR. Please feel free to correct me.

Looks like the wiper has failed.

However it looks like a 3.6k pot, so if you can measure the total sweep/movement, it should help identify a suitable replacement.

I looked at the datsheet for those last night and meant to ask if it has a return spring? If you move the lever with your meter connected does the resistance change over the full deflection? If it does is there a spot or two where the reading is lost or vastly increased?
That PMR411B392094WC 3.9k model pops up in supplier searches, on the Vishay datasheet there are 4 body types and it looks like 3.9k resistance is common to 4 body types. You need to do some measuring and compare with the dimensional images on the datasheet. The one you have is listed but as you found not listed as stocked anywhere.
When I have need of electronic components I often find the part I want has long since been superceeded by a newer MPN, having the electrical values and dimensions normally turns up a fully compatible piece.
The not good news in my own searches is that all the European suppliers I know have those parts listed as multiples of 10 or even 100 for minimum order.
