I know a few other arty types who work in three dimensions and none of us can draw, it seems to quite a common one. Odd that.

Funnily enough, I have zero artistic talent yet always do the same. Never drawn an actual plan for anything yet, (other than basic diagrams to describe things to other people). I expect you likely do the same as in that what you envisage initially always tends to be somewhat different from what you end up with too, due to so many minor alterations and changes being made to the plan in your head as you go along?

I looked into this business once upon a time.
It seems some people can think in three dimensions, I always thought everybody can do it.
Think about a shape, turn it over in your head, add bits, check wheat they line up with, move them about, and remember it. But most people dont think like this. Something to do with which hemisphere of the brain you use.

What I find weird is that I can file an idea away and come back to it later.
I was sat in the pub with my mates last night, miles away working on an idea. Apparently I just sit there staring into space and dont notice anything going on around me. As a kid I used t get yelled at all the time for daydreaming. Now I do it for a living.

A lt of the time the 'plan' comes out completely different, but occasionally it is like following a set of instructions, very rarely I get a day where I float around working competently, not stopping and nothing goes wrong. Very occasionally.
The sculpture below was an example of this.
I had the microphotograph on the wall for months, then one day the basic shapes presented themselves to me as a set of components.

I abandoned what I was meant to be doing and, hell it worked out.

Other days I just cut up metal and hurt myself for no gain at all.

Interesting about the visualisation. It took me a while to realise that some people can't.
I also do it in my head, despite being drawing trained. Just use those to explain to clients or get precise measurements. The rest is a photo quality image of the finished product in my head. This really helps to sort out problems before they appear in the work, as I can 'see' all the functions in action. SWMBO quizzed me about it one time. I explained it as actually having had the item in front of me before I made it. So making a copy, in effect.

I honestly never knew that. Seems it's one of those cases where what one can do personally is what one classes as being the norm. It would explain why it's so infuriating, on occasion, trying to get people to understand the basics of what one means though. It's obviously not intentional when they act like we're talking double dutch.

I've always just classed that as being part and parcel of the fact that we can't put owt intelligible on paper. The only usable place for storing it is in memory.

Nicely done on the making a living from it front. I'm not jealous, honest. I'm still stuck with far more mundane methods. Do you find the (phasing out|daydreaming) bit does tend to annoy some people? Our Gert especially used to hate that. She finally got used to it, though it took a while.

That must be a testing process? I tend to approach it the opposite way, and wait until I've gone through various mental revisions and have the basics quite firmly set and perfectly workable, (in theory), in mind. Revisions and adaptations then happen through the course of it, as needed, or when another approach/idea occurs and appears more feasible. I do, however, have the odd days where I might as well just pack in and forget it. Absolutely nothing seems to go right on certain days. It's as if every single move or idea is blighted.

That turned out well. Must admit, I'm not generally one for modern art/structure type stuff, but that does have some nice form to it. It's not akin to being poked in the eye with a sharp stick, like some stuff these days. You must be very proud of that piece.

If it sells I will be gutted (but pleased).
There is some hideous sculpture being imposed on people lately. That monstrosity they have put up for the olympics is on my 'To Do' list.

It definitely appears complex, especially the longer one looks at it. It's almost hypnotic, staring at it.

most of the blind rivets i have come across in aviation nowadays are of
mbc type

the link shows using pneumatic puller but they pull ok with a hand puller, especially if you can source the rivets with a collar already fitted.

if you want the back to look nice then there is no substitute for using solids
hiduminium or "hids" are the flavour of the moment.
fyi you dont hit the back of the rivet you hit the front or use a pneumatic chisel with dolly fitted and a reaction block forms the back.
aircraft themselves are pretty delicate most skins and stringers will be around 1mm thick ally.

Good points there.
That website drove me mad, thought my PC had gone weird on me.
I minimised it and kept getting these weird noises. It was the animation playing in the background.
These is some good stuff on there, good to see pictures of both sides of the rivet. I may have to get onto the company to get hold of a few samples. of course I still have to get the job. But I think I will get hold of some anyway as I can see uses for this stuff in my work.

When I used to make aluminium skinned race car wings some years ago I would mainly use 1/16" countersunk rivets. These small flush fitted rivets can look very neat and gives an aerodynamic 'look' to a wing structure.

That looks great, Chunko. Reminds me a bit of some of M C Escher's work - Moebius strips etc.

There is quite a bit of that in it.
I fancy making a giant version that you can walk around inside like a hamster wheel.
