Rip down the rest of the old plasterboard or overboard?

What do you regret about it?

I overboarded our kitchen ceiling when I redid the kitchen and drilled loads of big holes in the original to pull the wiring through and it's been fine for the last 10 years (unlike the cabinet doors).

Part of the bedroom is flat roof and small leak took a while to show through by which time the old, overboarded, plasterboard swelled so now no option but to remove the lot. Other bedroom, not overboarded, where there was a leak simply needed a new small section of plasterboard letting in to repair

Several people mentioning insulation. While it's generally worth insulting an amount, in this situation, it's worth asking what it is you are trying to insulate against. Without upgrading every other heat sink in the porch, a lot of insulation will be a bit of a waste though.

My original plan was to overboard but after pulling down the first section I was then thinking, rip out the rest. Looks like that's the consensus.

Just looked at the price of insulated plasterboard but it's crazy expensive so will stuff with conversation insulation as I've got half a roll, but as said above, it's almost pointless as the porch is made of single glazing and 15mm panelling.

to answer the both of you that stone will soak up the sunlight that enters that room rather well from the windows whilst its single glazed it will still the room temp from dropping to outside temps

the insulation just improves the heat loss as well from both the house when the door is opened and also the heat source of the wall

single glazed greenhouses used to manage rather well in winter months for years but they did have a heat source to help them keep warm it was always condensation that was an issue but well maintained ones lasted forever

Ignore all the bodgers, pull it down. Its a dirty job, but not like its inside the house anyway.

Opportunity to apply some wood preserver too. If it were me, I would insulate with Celotex offcuts from a skip or free ads.

Maybe use the green (I think) plasterboard that is water resistant.

I like the gloss paint on ceilings in this type of property. It is what they would have done years ago, and looks right.

gloss they didnt use as thats the worst paint to use as it needs sanding back to repaint again

Just been through this with the kitchen. Pulled down the old plaster, a lot of mess. Revealed a birds nest of wiring to sort out too.

Shoulder is good but knee is a bit weak after getting an ACL replacement, however recovering well, so no reason not to get up a ladder!

It's not completely pointless, just probably nearly completely. A heat loss calculation would help decide how much insulation would make sense. Little point in the effort of that though - your decision sounds perfect, use up something you already have instead of buying something a financial/carbon payback period longer than a lifetime.

It also saves having to dispose of it, or have it cluttering up the place forever.

I was joking.
They aren't kids anymore 18 & 20 when that picture was taken nearly a year ago.
They can bloody well lend a hand now and then when I need it.
They haven't wanted for anything those boys, they've had much better than I had as a kid.

ive always taught mine to help out there elders if you dont then dont come knocking as it wont be there

its also the same with inheritance dont expect it if your not there to help

I do believe you need to "earn your inheritance"...

Not to expect it to land on a plate.

Your parents do everything for you as child - when they get old and revert to children - it is "pay back time"...

I do feel strongly about this subject...

Didn't get to it till 4 today but made a bit of progress. The roof seems to be made of tin plate.

The drain.

On closer inspection I found this perforation.

I cleaned it up smeared it all round in OB1 and wrapped it in a coke can. Also liberally smeared the inside of the pipe as that may not be the only hole.

Then pulled down the rest of the plasterboard which took no time at all.

Getting the nails or screws out takes longer than getting the board down. Timber looks in good condition !

Unusual the roof would be clad in steel, very hard to work. Try a magnet on it, might be zinc

I think it is zinc, that's what I mean to write as there is no rust on it.

if you fit latts up no need to denail the lot of it only at the edges and because its latted you also get to insulate it as well

as goes for the roof as long as it works now and is sealed leave it alone if its damaged then id consider bring the point back again but thats me as i live in yorkshire where bay windows are still leaded

In our house I pulled the lot down and pink fire boarded everywhere. The pink board is a lot tougher and less prone to the usual cracking....I used it on the walls too!

Lathe and plaster is great...but it has a life...and when it's starting to fail someone could end up with a ceiling on their head!
