Rip down the rest of the old plasterboard or overboard?

Started this job today. Tidy up the porch wiring etc.

The old ceiling is gloss painted plasterboard. I ripped out the end section to investigate a leak.

So should I rip out the rest or overboard?

I'd just overboard it personally and save the mess.

My sons bedroom is lathe and plaster. Its cracked and uneven. I am going to baton it out and then overboard that. I have the height not to worry and I've taken that stuff down before and its a rotten and dusty job so dont see the point really!

Beautiful brickwork and stone there.

For gawds sake rip out that nasty old plasterboard! It is a thousand times easier to start from scratch than to work around nasty old work. Also, you end up with a much better result. It takes no time at all to rip it out but you'll be tripping over yourself trying to work around it.

IMO, overboard, that way you can cut in to old ceiling to feed any new switch cable/s, stagger the new board joints if you can.

Plasterboard and lathe is a law unto itself, horribly nasty to repair or remove. Perhaps the one case (apart from asbestos) where it's a LOT easier to just encapsulate.

Tear it out, hide the cables and board with some insulated plasterboard, run the joints side to side so easy to tape/fill, wouldn't need plastering then either

rip it down and insulate is my opinion even if it means adding laths to equal 4" insulation

box in the down pipe and insulate around it

leave the stone wall clear looks loverly that way

Rip it out sort leak out insulate and re board. Jobs a gud un.

I overboarded one bedroom and the hall in our house probably 30 + years ago. Now regret it and intend ripping down the bedroom ceiling the doing it the way I should have done all those years ago

What do you regret about it?

I overboarded our kitchen ceiling when I redid the kitchen and drilled loads of big holes in the original to pull the wiring through and it's been fine for the last 10 years (unlike the cabinet doors).

ive overboarded about 4 ceilings with great success and renewed 2 . for that size id rip it down rewire and put insulation in then re board it . the overboarded has a few advantages more soundproof more insulation and half hour fire resistant

Several people mentioning insulation. While it's generally worth insulting an amount, in this situation, it's worth asking what it is you are trying to insulate against. Without upgrading every other heat sink in the porch, a lot of insulation will be a bit of a waste though.

Just looked at the price of insulated plasterboard but it's crazy expensive so will stuff with conversation insulation as I've got half a roll, but as said above, it's almost pointless as the porch is made of single glazing and 15mm panelling.

Luckily, the very best place to have any sort of insulation is in the ceiling.

I have similar victorian features. A very good product which is non destructive but incredibly effective is secondary glazing with plastic sheet. All you do is carefully apply double sided tape, carefully stick up the plastic sheet, hit it with a hairdryer and it disappears!

Very good heat and sound insulation. Would be very beneficial in a porch like yours...

It's not completely pointless, just probably nearly completely. A heat loss calculation would help decide how much insulation would make sense. Little point in the effort of that though - your decision sounds perfect, use up something you already have instead of buying something a financial/carbon payback period longer than a lifetime.
