Riello RDB2 Burner Problems

Posted yesterday that I'd got the oil boiler going again by fitting a pump I found in the garage and I thought new. There was no pressure when I fitted a gauge. With the suspect pump off, turning the spindle and it felt "gritty".

Last night everything working.

Just came in today from a day's tree felling and and the bloody thing is locking out again.

Have you checked the filters? One of the two on mine was digusting, despite having been serviced by a reputable engineer previously - gave exactly those symptoms.

Is the plastic fuel pump drive intact? The internal part can get damaged and loose the flat drive edge

Rang the BiL and asked if he had any. He said no, he usually makes them out of the end of a file. So I did (Draper). Quick job with a Fakita grinder and head torch out on the patio. Not perfect but it seems to work. 9.5x3x2 is the size I think:

Yep, all good. Interestingly there is a bit of damage to the end of the "forked" motor shaft that plastic bit engages with. I bought 10 of those plastic things years ago.

That happens to Riello pumps when they run dry (even intermittently) as they get a partial seizure and overload the drive components. That’s a big clue right there

I did notice the shut off valve in the oil line, after the filter, (photo above) was half closed when I first started to investigate. SWMBO had put a pair of her boots on top. I keep telling her.

boiler locked out again this morning. Pressing the reset and it sounded like it was straining / stuck.

Took the air intake end off and rotated the fan by hand. Felt a tight spot. Took the pump off and again rotated the fan, free as a bird. Had replaced the bearings a couple of years back. The pump however felt a big tight. Flushed if through with a can of W5 "do it all", WD40 esque stuff from Lidl. Pump seemed to free up. Back on and rotating the fan and everything felt much better. Back on and working...for now.

Fans use a bearing material (can't for the life of it remember what it is called)

It is superb as a bearing until it overheats, because it expands but does not contract, so causes fans to seize

I found a slightly galled spot within a boiler pump once. It needed the fan prodding (with a steak knife iirc) to get it going. Cleaned it up and it ran well until decommissioned a few years later. Pump disassembly/reassembly was a bit fiddly

I think so, it's p***ing out when I bleed it at the pump. I will mind check the filter.

Yes it's kerosene. All behaving itself at the moment.

Boiler locking out again last night. I've yet to change the filter. It's the one on the wall under the 20A DP switch.

Anyone know what the filter element size is inside? I'll buy a few. I don't want to change the whole bowl! It's 3/8" BSP fittings either side of the filter. All I have is the old box the filter came in:
