The strips are hard plastic with a metal core. It appears they are hard to get off without breaking the mounting studs, so restoring the existing ones looks like a poor option.
I made a rear bike number plate from a piece of 10mm ply. Wasn't sure whether it was exterior grade or not (probably not), so sealed it with a couple coats of varnish then put two coats of Aldidly exterior white gloss on it, paying extra attention to the edges. That was ten years ago, still working fine.So before pushing on with a Plan C, surely someone has good knowledge of a best approach for painting.
You say that the clips get broken in removing the old strips, how do you intend to fit the pieces of wood which do not have the mounting clips fitted to them?
