Replacing fluorescent tubes in the workshop with LEDs

As it was 10 quid courier charge I bit the bullet and ordered 4 tubes, came in at 24 quid each. I shall let you know how I get on, don't hold your breath as I tend to get sidetracked........

Interesting devices. I have these 600x600 fluorescent lights in the shop and did a quick calculation based on their figures. It would take ten years to break even, so no point in throwing originals out until forced.

ive just changed 40 recessed pl lights that the bulbs and fittings were on the way out at a school with the 600 x 600 led pannels there far more superior for light and economy than flourescents .off hand i think they were kicking out 260 lumens of light

As I don't have any lights to start with I am looking at LED as an option to tubes, there are quite a lot of options for 600x600 flat panels like these http://www.ledhut.co.uk/commercial-led-lighting/40-watt-high-output-595-x-595-led-panel.html

All seem to be aroubnd £70-£80 for a 40W fitment with about 2000-3000 lumens. Thinking 4 of these in a 5m x 3m room instead of tubes.

They can be surface mounted and have a very low profile which appeals as I want to sling some moveable gantry to help move stuff about.

if there surface mounted u need the base plate mounting for them as on there own there only suitable for suspended ceilings

Yep saw that about the fixings. have seen some for £15 which makes the fixture 80-90 all up, maybe double the cost of a cheep twin tube but cheaper to run and better light i think.....

LEDs are the way forward, they've replaced a load of Sodium Highbays in the sheds, the accountant worked out they would pay for themselves after 10 months use. they were £135@ + sparky.

The misconception of LEDs being cold light, is just that. They still create quite a bit of waste heat, you've only got to look at the casings of some of the CREE light clusters and they are basically giant heatsinks. Keen to hear how people get on but I think I will stick to flo lamps.

Thats what my mate did I am sure he put 240v direct to the tube ends and on 8ft he used 2x 4fts with extra lamp holders in middle.

Yes, dissipating heat generated by LED's is a very important, and not always easy, part of them.

But compared to ordinary filament bulbs they do give out a lot less heat overall.

For 600x600's you can get a direct fit replacement unit that's LED, rather than tubes. Has a 100% FYA on it as well (so you can write it off against tax 100% in it's first year) and they use about half the power of normal units. Worked out a trade counter of ours would save £15 a month by swapping them.

The philips LED tubes arrived today, I was expecting to need to rewire the fittings too however, looking at the instructions, for a single tube fitting there's no rewiring to avoid the ballast, and they include a replacement starter, which I assume to be a dummy. If its a double fitting there is some rewiring however I only have singles. Job for the weekend.
