Repairing insurance write off bale trailer?

A mate is looking for a 28 foot bale trailer ready for this year’s harvest
New trailers are horrendous price and there’s a long waiting time
Second hand are not far from new price
there’s a firm that sells insurance written off farm machinery, just a couple of weeks ago a bale trailer was advertised with what appeared only fault was bent ring hitch at front
What are rules regarding repaired write off machinery??
Does insurance have to be informed?
Do repairs have to be inspected?

A bent drawbar eye wouldn't write off a trailer.( I probably replace one a month ) there must be more damage .

Bent drawbar would mean it’s probably been on its side, I would wager something else is twisted or bent. I would avoid unless you can go look at it properly.

I’d second / third that.

It isn’t just a bent drawbar. They’re not being honest with you.

If the rest of it is bent, only a bit, you’ll get alignment issues and all the problems that go with that.

To use it back in the workplace you need to comply with PUWER and C&U if it’s going on the road.

Easiest way it to get an inspection. That’ll keep your insurance happy also.

A few out there. BAGMA are good. I would avoid TILLY. I say that as a TILLY Tester, soon to be an ex TILLY Tester.

Once they go over once they then seem to become quite fond of it and go for regular lie downs.
If you want cheap then a tipper trailer with a completely rotten skip but sound axles + a flat bed lorry body is as cheap as it gets.

They make a dolly with wheels and the 5th wheel hitch on it, hook to a farm tractor....for those "muddy fields"

I know fifth wheel bogeys exist, but they're not much use for anything other than flat land.
I was more pointing out that our resident YouTube expert doesn't have a clue what he's posting about.

They do. Technically, the dolly is a trailer, so the first trailer is unladen and the second one is laden. Which is illegal here.

You can tow two trailers but there are rules.

People have been prosecuted for it. Not that I agree with it.

The loophole is, If you take the dog clip out and replace it with a bolt the second trailer cannot be disconnected without tools, therefore the combined trailer(s) are legal as it’s now a conjoined system.

I think it’s conjoined. I can’t remember the right word but basically it’s now one trailer not two.

It’s a stupid law / loophole.

There is also a grey area regarding using a HGV trailer as the second trailer.

It’s registered as an HGV trailer so it needs an MOT. you cannot re register it as agri. Again, I do not agree and I think they are wrong but there’s argument going on with the DVSA about that at the moment as some folk are starting to get prosecuted for that one also.

Like it’s not hard enough to make a quid.

The dolly is simply used by the farm tractor in the field to move them around from and to the roadway. OTR truck still takes them singly down the road.

There are a few trailer dollies coming into use now. Powered with either tractor tires or tracks. Even one that lifts the whole trailer clean off the ground. Will become quite important with the prosecutions for mud on the road.

That’s interesting.

The dolly / commercial trailer thing seems to have been jumped on by TILLY and fed out to some police forces and DVSA areas that take her word as gospel.

I had a friend round for dinner the other day and she is a trainer for DVSA roadside enforcement. She seems of the same opinion as me re the dolly thing.
