I had a friend round for dinner the other day and she is a trainer for DVSA roadside enforcement. She seems of the same opinion as me re the dolly thing.

Grey area though as you are allowed an unbreaked agricultural implement. And it can be argued that the dolly is an implement rather than a trailer.
All the ones I have used had the release bar welded up with the idea that they are no longer two separate components

but farmers want to pull overladen trailers from fields via a tractor hitch fair comment for pulling certain machinery i agree on a tractor is best suited for field work

but once vehicles go onto the road they should be bound with the over weight restrictions that many trailers are well over weight

as goes for the hitch on the tractor it has its uses elsewhere with different machernery being pulled with it but the trailer is one point compared to other things being pulled

personally i think its about time they did spot checks on farm vehicles and trailers and lets see how fast you farmers scream when your fined for over weight and how road worthy your vehicles are

i bet many of the farmers are well over weight

Tractors are bound by weight limits.
The type of hitch used is totally irrelevant, just like you suggesting a van should be cut up to use a fifth wheel.

And you may be shocked to know that they do do spot checks on tractors. My brother has been checked twice, and if they feel the need, they will weigh the setup, just like they might weigh any other vehicle that they stop.

That’s the problem. Grey area. It really does depend where you are when you get stopped it seems.

It’s all a mess to be honest. A lot of this exemption stuff comes from the days of grey Fergies not the mega horsepower things we have today.

Welding the lock does tick the box, but that creates its own problems of maintenance and greasing in that area. Bit of a double edged sword.

They are getting really hot on it.

Norfolk are seriously cracking down on agricultural exemptions being misused.

I personally know a bloke who got done for Driving Otherwise In Accordance because he had a machine (forklift i think) on a trailer behind a tractor. That makes it haulage so it becomes a C+E, not a tractor and trailer, and needs all the associated stuff to go with it.

Bit of a postcode lottery as some are going a bit more crazy than others but I’ve heard a few stories like that from Norfolk in the last few years.

I don't know if you are allowed as such but more that there is nothing to say you aren't allowed.

As you say the rules are in dire need of a review by a few people who actually know what they are looking at.

Perhaps not such a good idea to buy write off

Depends what you can get it for vs what it’ll potentially cost to put it right.

Helps a lot if you can find an honest seller.

Don’t know your setup but if you can at least jig it or make a jig for it then you’ve a good chance of a viable repair.

I’d think twice about a rolled one. One that’s had an axle fire or something would be a better bet. At least the geometry is probably still correct.

The example I was given, and I know someone who got nicked for this, is a farmer going to town to get bulk bags of fertiliser on his trailer. As it’s not actual farming operations, ie taking fertiliser to the field to be spread, then that’s haulage.

So the tractor / trailer becomes a lorry and there fore needs HGV licenses, MOTs and so on and so on.

You can MOT an agricultural tractor as a HGV Category T and stay on the right side of things but then it’s a HGV and not a tractor so you don’t get agri exemptions.

You can’t have your cake and eat it basically.

Much of the enforcement depends on local / regional DVSA and Policing attitudes

For some it’s a huge thing, other forces couldn’t care less and obsess over other things like motorbikes or whatever.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of any of this stuff.

The farmer who bought my step-dad's BTD8 crawler last year came to fetch it with a tractor and 15 ton trailer, he did a 50 mile round trip. But he also ran a haulage business so likely at least had an HGV licence.
