Warm, yes. Damp, no. Of course, it can't be 100% efficient, but it does extract a lot of the water and the retained heat (indoors) is substantial. We run a dehumidifier in our house anyway.

I thought the same way before buying one but it has proven to be excellent and would not consider a vented unit.

We have condensing. It is excellent. Bangs plenty of heat out back into the house rather than outside.

I bought a condensing one when we moved here, mainly for ease of installation - no need for it to be against an outside wall for the vent.
Unfortunately the small utility room has the washing machine, freezer, CH boiler and the tumble dryer.
We moved in in June.
The utility room turned into a sauna!
When the weather is amenable, SWMBO uses the outside whirlygig. The tumble dryer is used most when it is raining and there is already high humidity. When the utility room temperature fell below 30C, the humidity, at 100%, still made it uninhabitable.
The builder installed a teeny tiny extract fan that made noise but no impact.
I rearranged stuff, cut a vent hole and exchanged the condenser dryer for a cheap vented one.
Problem solved and the room gets high volume extract 'for free'.

Using the bathroom scales, wet clothes from the washing machine 7.4 kg
After being in the tumble dryer 6.2 kg
Hence, 1.2 kg of water (and fluff!) removed.

812g of water collected.

Approximately 0.4 kg of water must have been released into the indoors air.

Vented all day long, dries clothes much faster.
When my washing machine stopped pumping water I got the part number from the failed pump and put it into eBay and found a new pump for the machine which was over 12 years old, the OP will probably have success doing the same with his timer.

The PCB in our vented dryer died few year back, could not find a full built in one to replace it, eventually found the part number for the PCB, located some parts place that had one, ended up meeting late one night in a garage forecourt, it was more like selling secrets to the russians, I blame greta

I did this with our 20+ yr-old bosch washing machine in Nov 22 thinking it was a mechanical timer issue, but found it was entirely pcb-controlled and had two cracked solder joints ... (might have posted this before, sorry)...

Cleaned & resoldered, & has worked fine for the last 2+ years...

Then I use a dehumidifier (or two) in the smallest room in the house where I hang the washing if I can't hang it outside. Drys pretty quick.

Today though, nice dry, breezy day, so out on the line it went.

We got a dehumidifier and it makes a big difference to drying time. Those heated clothes horses are supposed to be good too.

Spot on. Clearly, from post #1, no need for any bypassing of anything.

As long as the timer contacts are sufficiently robust an easy approach, although unless an electronic timer it may only work in 15minute steps at best.

Problem with that is most tumble driers have a cool down period at the end of the cycle to cool down the heating element. You shouldn't really stop one mid cycle. A plug in timer will bypass that, possibly increasing fire risk.
