Is there anywhere else you can think of where you'd be arguing over the value of fixing a stanley knife, and be getting down to the level of model numbers!!! 
I didn't even THINK of fixing mine until this thread came up, now I'm starting to wonder if I can/should, and do Stanley do spare parts, or do I manufacture the replacement myself, and if so, how would I do the button....

I'm sure I have a couple of newer holders kicking around...but the chances of finding it are probably nil!

The people that don't have time or interest in repairing things and throw them away supply all my tools
I understand that a tradesman or company doesn't have time to repair tools , most companies now won't repair a 9 " grinder that needs new brushes or a wet dry vac with a damaged cable, it goes in the skip and I pull it out.

Same here, most people don't use then. I find they just retract and I grate my knuckles on the floor, it's a knife and mentioned to cut things FFS.

I still have a Stanley style knife I was given as a kid around 1970, my uncle was working in Kowloon and thought it would be useful when building Airfix kits, it shows the difference in attitudes then as my parents didn't bat an eyelid when I got it for Christmas.

Our neighbour "acquired" one of these from work and gave it to me, genuine Stanley. Push the blade out, after the cut it auto retracts.
What a piece of junk!!! Best thing about it was the spare blades it came with. I prefer my old school get the screwdriver out to change blade Stanley handle from half a lifetime ago. The new one is in a drawer, waiting till I throw it out!

A common alternative name for a Stanley knife is a box cutter.
In that situation, in a warehouse, under time pressure, you can understand the safety benefits of a self-retracting one (take from pocket, open box, put back into pocket, avoid stabbing yourself). Other than that, for anything more strenuous, as you say, thet are next to useless.

Looking at the blade holder, a good candidate material for its replacement might be a piece of steel pallet strapping. You would have to hot bend it or it will fracture but it looks to be a similar grade of steel to the original.
If making a new retracting blade holder is difficult, you might still be able to convert it into a fixed blade and add a 3DP scabbard.

Nor did you feel the need to stab someone with it, (not sure where that thought came from but...) unfortunately we are in a very different world now.
Its great you still have it and not lost it after all this time.

I had a surgical scalpel for the same purpose as a kid for balsa kits...did cut myself a few times but quickly got the hang of it. I was also allowed glue and sharp pins too!

It only takes one person to cut themselves, report it, & then everyone suffers the H&S lockdown.
If you injure yourself at work, then by law it needs reporting and recording. Cuts are no different. Certainly helps identify problems and allow them to be worked around.
And if anyone who is employed by someone thinks H&S is a problem . . . then you're an idiot. Admittedly, how some H&S people try to apply new rules under the guise of H&S is sometimes idiotic, but the basic premise of going home uninjured, alive, from work is not something to be laughed out, no matter how minor.
While I did laugh at the idea of the idea of banning fixed blades etc, you cannot argue with the reduction of injuries on our sites worldwide - that slip with a knife might be a minute cut on a finger . . . or a slice through something important. Of course, the cut on the finger, insignificant at the time, can lead to infection, loss of digits, time off work etc.

I don't think it's a problem, as such. Problematic on occasion, yes, but it is necessary.
However, it doesn't detract from the fact that you can only go so far in protecting people from themselves. A blanket ban doesn't account for varying levels of experience, common sense & knowledge.
