Repair of Stanley knife

Anyone got one of these in the retractable version ?

I'm looking into repairing this one but I'm missing the internal parts, which will have to be hand made. Knowing what it looks like would be a start.

Based on my minds eye memory of my own "grey with yellow end knob" Stanley knife, I reckon it would be the same internals as the usual "push down and slide out" mechanism on other Stanley knives. I bet if you got one of those you could swap the internals over... if you prefer that housing.

Everything is worth the effort of fixing for me , I live by repairing, recycling and refurbing tools and equipment, I'm retired so my time is my own, part of the reason for spending hours making a complex part for a £16 knife is that i enjoy it. 100% it is not economical in business terms.

I get that totally. The other thing is keeping the grey matter ticking over while you figure out a solution.

I stand corrected. OK say £20 then. Still reasonably cheap, Though my previous post still stands

That's the part, thanks to Dobbslc , i think it's possible to make from spring steel sheet , two bends on each side into a channel shape to make a blank, , cut to shape and rivet the knob onto the flat spring .

I was an apprentice as a gunmaker so making small parts from scratch was my bread and butter, I still enjoy it.

I gave up on Stanley knives years ago, 15mm copper pipe, hammer, knife blade, endless supply, blades can still be changed and custom length to match job as required.

i have a nice retractable dewalt one . had it for years . much better than the stanley krap

We have to use auto retracting ones at work. Don't know what the make is, Stanley blades don't fit as the ones for it have two holes in them as well as the usual notches.

We had the same at one place I worked, the elf & safety man decreed all the "proper" knives should be binned in favour of the self retracting ones, luckily our boss managed to convince him maintenance had the skills & training to use the old style safely so we kept them.
