remember it has a BSI that shuts down when van is locked up after about 20/60 seconds so battery won't go flat overnight me i would change relay first easy job first then glow plugs after 100 k will be worn anyway

but if the relay is stuck in the on position, I doubt the bsi would be effect it because the HP relay would be fed from a large fuse direct on to the battery +?

It's far better to test parts and rule them out then it is to say I think k it's a b or c and simply throw cash at it, I've seen it happen where the bill gets quite big and the cure in the end is only a few quid

I'm at a point now that I can't rule it out without replacing it. Looking at the digram for the relay it has a control wire and a " diag" wire that goes to the ECU. I'm not getting a trigger signal into the relay but that could be because the ECU is detecting a fault so not sending the signal. I don't think the signal wire from the ECU is o/c as I do get around 1 volt which never changes whether the heater light on the dash is on or off.
The diagnostic code may actually be bang on as it the description is fault in glowplug module circuit.

Funnily enough I had exactly the same fault on my Trafic in December, engine management light came on and seemed to lose power on ascents plus the fuel consumption rocketed.
I had the benefit though of checking the fault codes on the van prior to the fault occurring and it already had the glow plug circuit fault on it and I just lived with it. My van always starts no matter how cold it got so it was one of those jobs I just never got round to.
I put off replacing the MAF until I noticed that the fuel consumption had dropped from 640 miles to a tank down to 440 miles
.The MAF was easy to change, about £40 on eBay, I can find the link if you need it. You have to be careful though as there is 2 different types, the pin layout is slightly different.
Once the MAF and was changed and the fault cleared from the ECU the fuel consumption and power returned to normal and I still haven't investigated the glow plug fault.

but as it's linked into the ECU and canbus i would think it would shut down with the BSI or the battery would be dead by the next day but as the battery is not dead so it must have shut it off somehow

Another update. Today I sneakily removed the suspect glow plug relay and tried it on another working Renault van with a cold engine and it started fine. To be sure I fitted my ameter on one of the glow plug leads and jumped to around 10 amps (this never happened on the traffic) while the light on the dash was illuminated.
So, the relay is ruled out but the glow plugs still aren't coming on.
Does anyone have a manual or diagram? I need to know what is before the relay. Is there some sort of module between the relay and ecu?

If the glow plug relay is can-bus or lin-bus linked to the engine control unit then it's more than likely that the engine ECU or what ever sends the signal to the reply to power up is not sending the power or the switched earth which ever is used.
This is based on the fact that you have probably got more than one faulty glow plug, if all 4 plugs show no ampage when you check them then they are faulty.
I'd start with replacing the plugs firstly, only a few quid each...

No worries, thanks for looking. The plugs have white rings. I'll get a Haynes book of lies and see if there is one in it. I'm not convinced all 4 plugs could have failed but I'll whip one out to test on a battery and replace them if necessary. At least I know the relay works.

Yep only few quid But the cylinder head is £1200!!
to save taking them out use a 50 w head light bulb in series ie have the possitive to one bulb terminal the other the goes to heater plug that way they only get 6v if the bulb glows the heater plug is ok.

What's the price of the head got to do with this?!?!
I've never ever had a single glow plug break in over 15 years of cleaning them.
All I do is take them for a good run and thrash them to get the head red hot and then they always release.
Worst case if they snap is to drill down the center and use a proper glow plug thread insert remover.
