Thanks BrokenBiker, i have the same drill and i have been very impressed with it, its taken a hell of a lot of abuse. But the clutch has started slipping now after using some large hss hole saws. Do you know if it has a clutch or is it just the plastic gear ring?
Thats only a mid range one isnt it?
Something came adrift inside mine when it snatched holesawing through some stainless. Lost all drive in either gear. Took it apart, put it back together, got drive but only in second gear, and the torque settings are goosed now too. Although, its still done everything i've asked of it since (DIY stuff after moving house) Really is time I upgraded though, its a 2006 model. 2 of the 3 batteries still hold a reasonable charge too. Was top of the range at the time. 10 years out of a cordless drill with medium (ab)use, I think i've had my moneys worth.
Nice report, indeed.
Now I know I will never dismantle one, if it at least 25% working.
Thanks.
Don't see how any of that lot caused it to drill wonky holes, unless the bearing on the chuck had gone causing the chuck to wobbleand where are those springs you mention I think they shot off when you stripped it as I can't see any in the pics

cant see it my self, may cause vibration within the gearbox but not enough mass to make the drill itself make orbital movementsDidt realise I Tom the picture before I took the springs out lol.
I would think that with broken springs there is uneven load in the gearbox unit causing a bad vibration/wobble which transfers to the drill bit...like trying to drill whilst moving the drill side to side really quickly...
you need to buy a drill not worth stealingYou lot need to buy better drills!
My old dewalt (don't remember the model but it was the top spec one with plug in batteries) was used to regularly drill 127mm holes and on occasion 150, through various materials, it was also used on site as a general purpose drill, hole saw, hammer, screwdriver etc
I'd be using it today if some scrote hadn't stole it, must have been nearly 10 years old and going strong
I doubt the Makita LXT (brushless) replacement will last as long, even with less useage
