removing a drill chuck

i want to get the chuck off my hitatchi 18V drill to see what is causing a wobble when drilling...

i have stripped the drill, separated the motor, dissasembled the gearbox and now im just left with the chuck, and the bottom half of the gearbox housing that holds the springs for the torque adjustment gubbing...

ive taken the screw out of the middle of the chuck but i cant get it to budge.

any suggestions?

Yeah, you've ruined your drill.

Just tighten a decent sized alan key into the chuck and give it a clout...anti clockwise...that will get it off.

Then put all the bits back together.

i havent used it for a while, needed to drill some 6mm holes today and noticed a horrible wobble and the holes arent round...

all the ones I have had to do the threaded bolt in the middle bottom of the chuck is L/H thread, The chuck R/H thread. head of the bolt is generally pretty damaged due to bits too far into chuck and not tightened up enough allowing them to spin.

Can't see you achieving anything with it off that you could see just by operating the chuck to see if the jaws are equal or if any crap got in there

If it's NiCad it's a good excuse to find a reason to bin it

i just wanna break it all down and make sure everything is straight and give it all a good clean and new grease, if it doesnt achieve anything its only an hour lost

in all fairness this drill has stood up to a lot more than the renault...i think ive had the drill longer too and this is the first problem i have had with it

If it was still in one piece, you'd put it in low gear, then a hex key in it...If there is a retaining screw through the chuck, thats a left hand thread, but I very much doubt the chuck its self is a left hand thread....else it would unscrew if you drilled a hole (If it didnt have the retaining screw)

i can get some vice grips on to hold onto the shaft that the chuck is on, will be returning to it in the morning

I don't know what experience you have with battery drills, but once a mate and I thought it would be a good idea to take apart his battery hammer drill. It was broken and scrap so nothing major problem to loose. ****** Ell, it had so many damn gears upon gears upon planters gears and did I say gears ?

All we ended up with was a pile of scrap.

Don't do it, life is too short to be dicking around with a battery drill. It's unlikely that you will check and or find anything wrong. Just ditch it and buy a new one

The gearbox In this one is quite simple. 3 sets of planet gears with an outer ring on each and then a square hole to engage with the chuck shaft, I think I found the problems with it, there are 4 springs with ball bearings on top for the torque and 3 of the 4 bearings were unseated and the springs were broken...will replace the springs when I get back in from work (at about 8pm ) and see what difference it makes
