Removing a bearing from a blind hole

If you think that the casting is delicate then the safest way is to cut the bearing out with a small grinding wheel or diamond bur. Those outer race are usually quite hard and brittle, you may only need to cut a small slot in the race and then leaver it away from the casting.

I remove bearings like this all the time. Welding is the simplest and quickest way of doing it. Stick or Mig, doesn't matter. It will take someone with a welder 2mins max to get that out without the slightest risk of damage, well unless they are blind and try and weld the wrong part

For a thin piece of cast iron there's a lot of suggestions involving hammers, which I would not rush to use.

Take it to somebody who can weld round the inside, it'll take as long to switch on the welder as do the job. Two minutes later it'll be done, turn it upside down and allow it to cool and the bearing race will fall out under its own weight. No damage.

weld it, tbh you don't even need to run a bead around several hot tacks will do the job.

it's my go to method for getting bearings out, it shifts the ones the breack the pulles and its quicker than getting pullers out there box

I've extracted seized in pistons from brake callipers,by forcing in 2 bolt heads, you may have to grind the heads to make a tight fit, the bolts must enter the piston dead vertically, then squeeze the bolts together in the vice & wiggle in a rotary direction, good luck with whatever works.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, can equal welding them.
Yes there are sometimes methods which can do the job and of course proper pullers but they don't even come close to making the item smaller. No matter how tight or how seized the weld is guaranteed to shrink them a few thou and so they're then loose in the hole.

The point of running a weld bead around the race is to shrink it so it falls out - I don't think jb weld puts enough heat in...

I was reading it as he meant so that there's something in the centre of the outer to attempt to press/punch against?

Rather than weld, can you fill it with milliput/JB weld?

The idea is when you weld around the ID you apply good direct heat and the welding actually distorts the object, reducing its diameter. It's quite an amazing process

Yep.
Tis what I meant.
Thin casting + heat is asking for trouble.
Plus - is it cast iron? Ali? Magnesium

You can weld bearings out of cast iron , steel , Ali and magnesium castings no problem.

The bearing is press fitted so the moment you heat it quick with the weld it cannot expand as the housing retains it and it’s so soft due to being hot the race just deforms that little bit I mean we are talking thou, then as it cools back down it shrinks another couple of tho, that is all it needs. Every year I remove loads 42mm x 10 mm outer races that are in web rollers they have rubber tyer bonded to them on the outside of the bearing houseing that’s only a few mm from the outer race. 4 hot racks wait 30 seconds tap and they fall out. The bearing houseing bearly gets warm It’s only small but has plenty of thermal mass to more than mop up all the heat, that houseing looks more substantial

Will say If you’ve not seen it done before it dose sound a bit sledgehammer and crowbar and people don’t like the sound of it. But once you’ve seen it done it’s actualy very presice and gentle one the houseing
