I suspect you are quite wrong; If something came on the market that was outstandingly good, markedly better than anything else, then that would sell in to a huge worldwide market, both professional and domestic. I wonder what the world market for "WD40 kind of products" is worth? I'll bet a lot of money has been (is being?) spent on researching/developing new products, but all the data will be commercially sensitive so we won't see it. It's probably the case that their are good reasons why nothing outstanding has appeared; it's just down to how well anything can get down a rusted thread and the chemical and physical properties of iron oxide are fixed and pretty much known for many decades (ask the poor sods who had to significantly down-rate the Magnox nuclear reactors after they were all built) .because the vast majority of the time it's used for random odd jobs where the customers can't tell much difference.
