Relay Wiring

I'm trying to wire up a current sensing relay,
Having problems as it doesn't seem to function as I expected,

First thing, can someone confirm the wiring?

2 pictures below, first is from the data sheet,
Second is printed on the side of the relay.



Am I supposed to connect both 'L' terminals to live or just one?

Based on the bottom diagram both Ls get connected to the incoming live Lk is connected to the load downstream. The branch L to Lk is what does the current sensing and L to N provide the current required to switch the coil in the relay.

Both Ls might be connected internally in the relay.
Measuring the resistance between the two Ls would tell you if that's the case.

My meter shows continuity between both L's and also Lk. (all 3 are connected)

I did open one up to have a look, both L's go into different pcb"s

The first diagram will be correct. The load is connected to Lk and Neutral. The two Ls are connected together internally according to the second diagram, but it would not hurt to feed them both.

There will be continuity across L to Lk because it has a current shunt. The voltage developed across that shunt is what the relay senses.

Well,
I've got it working but not sure it's right?


Top left hand socket is plugged into an extension bar, this has a battery charger and a kettle plugged in.
This socket is the one monitored by the current sensing relay.

The right hand socket is (was) plugged into a hair dryer. That's fed from a normally closed contactor, contactor is fed from the #18 from the relay.

When powered up, I've got power to both sockets, the charger and the hair dryer both run.
When I turn the kettle on the hair dryer turns off. When the kettle has boiled there is a 5 second delay then the hair dryer turns back on again.

This is exactly how I wanted it to work so happy days.

Only confusion is,
On the relay, the green light (U) is On. The red light (I) is flashing slowly.
This is with nothing connected, does not change with the charger connected.

This might be normal but I don't really understand the manual! What does "an excess of less than MIN" mean?

Also,
Fiddling with the dials doesn't seem to let me set the relay low enough for the charger to trigger it, charger is 85w (so about 2.7a?)

Plugging the (running) hair dryer into the extension bar just turns the red light on permanently and doesn't activate the relay?

It's a 16a version of the relay but should go down low enough?

Assuming you are talking 240v 85 watts is about .0.35a assuming it's not a reactive load?

“Excess of MIN” just means it’s exceeded the MIN threshold I think??

Oh yeah, I did the maths backwards on that one!
Might make sense that the charger doesn't draw enough for the relay to detect.

Still unsure why the hair dryer causes an error though?

Your max isn't set to low for the hair drier?
Of max set lower than min?

Setting the max at anything below 60 will work with the kettle.
Won't work with the hair dryer at any setting.

With Min set at 5 the kettle works. If I turn Min above 10 I just get a solid red light (fault?)

Are you sure you have the correct function for what you want it to do? Would switching to another function help?

Eg using the overcurrent function but using the nc contact ok the relay

It works as well as I need it to.
Just not as I was expecting!

I'm using the UD undercurrent monitoring function.

I was originally planning to use OD overcurrent but, in that mode, the timer adds the delay before the relay comes in.

In UD mode the timer adds the delay before the relay turns off which works for me

You can turn the timer off though? From my understanding you want it to turn off the contactor when current is above MAX? Then I’d think you need to use the over current function.

The undercurrent function may do “some” of what you want but not all. The overcurrent may not be doing what you want currently (pardon the pun) but should do if you turn off the delay and set the MIN value approx the same as MAX, so that it trips and resets at roughly the same point.

I may be misunderstanding what you want though?

That's what I was originally thinking.
But, In overcurrent mode, the relay is ON in normal use, so turns off when the current goes above max.
I could get around this by feeding the contactor from the normally closed (#16) rather than #18.
Just means opening up the case again and moving the wire around.
Although (not really an issue) I don't like the way the yellow light is on all the time during 'normal' operation (although it seems to be either that or a flashing red one!)

Once I realised the timer worked the other way around in undercurrent mode it actually might be useful, device running on the monitored socket will be a hand-wash. Press a button and it pumps out hot water for 30 seconds. Quite often it's not enough water so you press the button again. A 10 second delay might help prevent unnecessary cycling of the loads on the switched socket

If the undercurrent function works then use it I guess, just seems that the overcurrent would be the logical function to use - once set up as you want it.

You tend to find on these sensing relays sometimes several functions do “almost” the same thing, and there’s very subtle differences between some of the functions.

I'll have another play with it over the weekend and see if I can figure out exactly how it works.

One thing that doesn't help is that it has 6 functions but 11 or 12 clicks on the dial.
I'm not 100% sure what function I'm actually selecting..
