Alec, can tou tell me what gas the tank is using and get the numbers off the compressor and make would be helpfull, getting the coolant at a lower temp takes more power thus not as efficient, you want to be evaporating your refrigerant at about 8*C colder if it was air and less for water.

HI piman , I just started a new Milking parlour install today , I dont have alot to do with the bulk tank or refrigreration side to be honest ....
Anyway i had a quick look at their setup today .
they have a dx tank (direct expansion) about 4000 litre and an ice builder running off one compressor . The ice builder is probably the size of two IBC's with two refrigeration "circuits " (not sureof the correct term
) two expansion valves /solonoids . The lines coming from the expansion valves looked about 3/8" .
Those type of ice builders (fabdec dairy kool) use a milk pump (available cheaply secondhand) to pump the chilled water through a plate cooler (heat exchanger) thus pre cooling the milk from about 30 degrees (cow temperature
) to more or less the desired temperature 4 degrees .
although it depends on a nu,mber of factors , milk flow rate water temperature etc....
The pump pumps from the bottom of the ice builder and returns above the water surface via a spraybar ie holes drilled in the pvc tube .
I think the chilled water is cooled overnight to use the cheap rate electric , easily done with the solonoids and time clock
i didnt check to see what rating the compressor was can have a look tomorrow if it helps ?
I see no need to use any additives eg glycol , you dont need to be freezing the beer afterall
AS for the bulk tank cleaners not sure of the composition but normally two types are used during alternate washings 1 acid based and 1 alkaline based

just to add to my post above , there were actually two compressors /condensors . A quick look at the rating plate the compressors were 1 phase pulling ,15 amps .each
good luck finding a secondhand unit , i know secondhand bulk tanks are in great demand now , a couple of years ago you couldnt give them away

thanks for rthat, we obviously bought our first bult tank at the right time.
Cleaning is not a problem as the chilled water and beer never mix although we do have a caustic chemical wash for the beer vessels.

Sorry, I forgot to check the compressor details yesterday, all I remember is that it is a Copeland and 1 H.P., and might still be on R22?

I finally got the nameplate details.
As I said a Copeland, DKSJB-100-CA6-000, 0.7Kw, 6.33 CuM\Hour
1982 1450 rpm HD/ND 25/20.5Bar 1ph 50Hz 220v FLA 6.7, LRA 31.0
I can't reconcile the 0.7KW and 6.7FLA, as the latter at 220v is in the order of 1.2 Kw at 0.8 pf. Or is the 0.7 Kw a heat output figure rather than electrical power rating. However 1.2 Kw is just over 1.5h.p. if it is electrical power.? (or else the power factor is drastically poor?)
