To loosen seized or gummed up stuff, a single heavy blow might not be the way to go.

What works better is multiple, softer blows, prolonged vibration rather than a sudden explosion. An air chisel or an SDS drill with one of the radiator sludge-dislodging tools in it works well. It will help if the item is upright with penetrating fluid puddled in the joint where the pieces should move.

I will give it a go at the weekend again. I tried wd40 and a copper faced mallet but it did nothing at all. They are stuck solid.

Have you soaked them in anything as recommended above yet? (Particularly warm citric )

Can’t do anything until weekend it’s pitch black when I get home. No I haven’t soaked them in anything yet, I don’t even think I have anything big enough to put 2 of them in, they are massive and weigh a ton. The third is smaller and may be manageable.

Cost a fortune to fill that up. I’ve asked me son to try and take some pictures and send them to me, that’s if he can pick them up. I would have to use an engine hoist to put them in a wheelie bin. Good idea though.

Out of those 3 I'd keep the 112p.

Should be an all steel vice and very hard to break.

It’s not much bigger than the no6 but it’s nearly twice the weight

If you want to minimise space for de-rusting, cut the knob off the handle tight to its underside and remove the cross bar. The vice would then likely go into a 25 litre drum with the top cut off.

Didn’t know about radiator agitator tool until I read your advice. Looks like something I can’t live without now. Bought one on Amazon. Cheers

Give them a wash in hot water / Fairy liquid to get rid of any of the WD40.

Chuck in a citric bath. It'll work better and quicker hot. Will still work cold but take longer. Periodically remove, wire brush, rinse and put back in.

Electrolysis is another option. Big bucket, washing soda crystals and a not too fussy DC power supply.

The better option, in my opinion, but not as simple as a citric bath. Still relatively easy, but does require extra items, a suitable psu being one.

Electrolysis is better for heavy rust but it only works line of sight so probably won't help here if the vice is seized.

Citric acid will get into every nook and cranny and should work to unseize the vice.
