Record 36p - Misaligned Jaws

Carbide endmill would be better in just about every way.

Yeah, they laugh in the face of standard carbide ...

I've just got some indexable end mills, maybe I'll pick up a pack of those banggood Inserts for tough stuff.

An unguarded grinding wheel bodged onto a milling machine, it just felt like it was asking for trouble. It's too slow as BS points out too, my mill tops out at 1700 RPM, a six inch wheel wants to turn about double that.

Use a 3 inch wheel.

Then you'd need a 7000 rpm spindle.

Edit: A 12 inch wheel would hit the overarm support.

Make an arbour with the center on bearings and a pulley and drive it from a separate motor.
You thought your idea was dangerous.

Yup, brain fart. I just a minute ago realised my silly mistake but knew I would be too late to correct it without being busted.

Yes it was peanuts off eBay and local, I should have known it was too good to be true!

The ‘bitsa’ theory seems reasonable. Whilst of course it could just be very bent it’s otherwise in too good condition with no signs of abuse. Obviously that doesn’t prove anything and a one off ‘incident’ is all it takes, but it seems odd.

I’ll keep it for now at least, it will do for heavy duty work as is.

Just another quick thought. I've got a vice that has had the bottom lip that holds the jaw up biffed off through some abuse. Makes the jaws sit oddly. Looks like yours is still in tact but can't see 100%

Is it the casting material it’s made from as my dad’s 36 has ‘steel’ written on it but my 36p doesn’t.
His was badly cracked & I was able to weld it. The runner pads were also worn so I rebuilt them with weld which helped raise the jaw when closed. The jaw runners were worn like a banana as well but I don’t have a milking machine so just left them as was. It still works a treat nonetheless.

Not sure on the 36, but IIRC on some of the other Record vices the "steel" version was a heavy duty one - cast steel instead of grey cast iron.

Iirc,one of those models was guaranteed unbreakable,Record told me when I bought a new qr nut back in ‘91.

I think those were the ones made from SG cast (ductile) iron instead of regular grey cast iron. I believe it was most of the Engineers line-up (34,36,83,110 etc) - apart from the ones that were marked as made from cast steel.

Mine is a 36P, "P" I believe stands for plain (no quick release) Had mine over 55 years and still going strong with the original handle still straight, I actually prefer the non quick release, and would never dream of fitting a tube over the handle for extra leverage!!!
