The last today, only because I was passing the site was a service visit to a 2 x
Emergency Back Up Generator set.

3 Cylinder Air cooled, diesel fuelled engine coupled to a single phase 5Kva set.
The system is 10 years old, serviced every 26 weeks, give or take a few.

Now there is nothing wrong with set Number one. Just reached it end of life run time, this will be quoted to be replaced with a service exchange system and the old one sent back to be re-conditioned and sold to another customer.

Set 2. This has been a pain ever since I first started looking after it. Before then it was only used as a last resort. It is the same engine and genny set up, but 4 years old.

Today the start battery was dead, the trickle charger was working, but 2 cells has gone down, the drop test caused some fun. Exchange it out and we got the engine to run.

On this system,(service visit) you run it for 4 minutes, switch the generator onto the load bank and carry out voltage and amp checks.
That was ok, but you could see and hear the engine revs were not constant. Blue smoke from crank vent and a pop as the dip stick lifted.

Phone call to the manufacture, talk with their Tech department.
Long story short.
The customer will have to buy a new engine, have the genny set over hauled and the old engine will be returned to teh manufacture. The good parts saved and teh rest junked. It is not cost effective for them to recondition.

I asked about buying a set from them for use at a home.
When The Tech guy stopped laughing. he told me.
He hasn’t got one yet.
They are flat out supplying system through out the UK and parts of Europe.


That is one site, 2 engines and too different results.
But the run hours (their is a gauge)are the same as my last visit, but the log book shows they are run every Thursday for 4 hours.
Oh the fuel has dropped from 2/3 to 1/3 level.

Are the reports accurate of the 4-hr weekly runs?
If so, sounds like the iffy set is being run offload every week, and the engine is bore-glazed, lost compression & pressurising the crankcase?
A check the engine breather is OK, and a full day at max on the load bank might recover the engine without needing to strip it down?

Sounds like somewhere I know . . . H&S manager jailed for fraud in his previous place of employment . . . completed signed off checklists for all machine tools were found, revealing complete, up to very recent date, records for several machines that had been scrapped off several years before . . .

Not at all.
The hours run meter is the same, as my last report.
The simple test showed the crank is being pressurised from the top of the engine. We don't carry many tools to do a detail inspection.

All I do is suggest a posible reason, confirm it with the manufcature and base my report on that.

No blame on me!!!!!!
