Mercury will kill everything off and not need any sort of reapplication.

Might just possibly be a teeny bit frowned upon though...

On a serious note, the weeds I hit with my mixture 2 days ago are yellow and wilting.
The blasted Ivy is only showing signs were the liquid was able to sit. Gas burner time.
The grass is also dead.

I would go with Ammonium Sulphamate as per seadogs suggestion.

Its cheaper and more effective than Glyphosate. Needs fewer applications too.

Glyphosate's main advantage is that Monsanto have genetically modified certain crops to withstand it so ideal in intensive agriculture and lessens the need to plough in weeds.

It's the daddy. Even gets rid of horse tail. Picture shows where horse tail broke through the tarmac around 5yrs ago. It never returned.

I haven't dug too deeply however it seems the only reason that ammonium sulphamate is not an approved herbicide in the EU is that the manufacturer didn't believe it was worth going through approval for cost reasons. So not so much banned as not approved. Its easy to get hold of though and its a simple chemical that breaks down easily.

Possibly a case of Monsanto or similar buying an MEP to drop a spanner in the works for the manufacturer. As stupid as it sounds it is still EU approved - as a compost accelerator and for tree removal

Rollered glyphosate would be easiest if it's a lawn. Works brilliantly and no collateral damage as you'd get with sprayed.

Don't discount a membrane that blocks the light. If it's down for three months then nowt is gonna grow under it.

Your choice mate. If you were closer I'd sort you out with whatever from the stores.

Personally, having done both ways it sort of boils down to WAF. If it's high then chemical as it's neater. If it's not an issue then go for membrane/carpet/whatever.

I recently bought a gallon of Gallup 360 (glyphosate) off amazon. £24.50 delivered. Its concentrated & there is enough in there to treat a huge area of land (acres) It works but seeds will grow so repeat spot application is needed.
As for it being in the food chain, that is because it is used as a dessicant, ie sprayed on crops a few days before harvest to accelerate the drying process before harvest time. Doing this means a farmer can get a rape seed crop in days before it would normally be ready, and that means an earlier crop is liable to attract a higher price.
And rapeseed oil is promoted as a healthy product !

From what I remember it was used by almost all of the Gov Agencies, and Forestry. Doesn't harm water coarses, no Dogs have ever been found to have suffered ill health through its use, as (Seadog) said the EU wanted the (<5) manufacturers to test it on dogs, they refused, saying there was no evidence in the 90odd yrs in use, it was also produced in such low volume, the costs would have been prohibitive

Copper Sulphate, also known as blue stone overseas, kills just about everything that grows. Plumbers sprinkle it in trenches around clay sewer pipes to stop roots finding their way in and choking off the pipes.

Salt works too. Don't know how concentrated the road salt is that the Gritter's use, but a few shovels full over some weeds should give you an answer in a short time. In my neck of the woods there are road salt bins on every street.

There was a thing about this on the BBC early this evening, the one show I think, they suggested that carefully applied acetic acid (vinegar) was the most effective and environmentally friendly

I have used it for years.
The only time I have issues with it, is only Ivy and other waxy leafs.
Then all I do is flash them over with a gas burner to crisp the leafs before I spray it.

I use washing up liquid in ammonium suphate, it wets everything and kills everything. Will also kill Japanese Knotweed, although the application is a little different.

I found a full bag of sodium chlorate in the basement when I moved house. Used it until I realised it was banned. I've never been able to replicate it's amazing properties until my diesel jerry can had a leak in it. Took me half an hour walking about garden before I found the leak, oh well

Shouldn't that be ammonium sulphamate? Sulphamate is a herbicide, sulphate is a fertilizer.
