Recommend me a weedkiller

I have a need to kill off about 200sq ft of rough grass prior to fabric + gravel.

Can anyone recommend a good weedkiller that will sterilize the ground for, say, 3 months+

Available without jumping through - i can prove im a business, using it for business use, but not "commercially" iyswim.

Glyphosate is the go to one.

Have you any old carpet or dpm? Excluding light will work even better as glyphosate is systemic so needs greenery to work. Excluding light will stop virtually anything from growing.

And it is cheep, non toxic, non nasty chemical and available over the shelf.
The list below is what I make up to go into a hand sprayer bottle.

I just adjust the amount, water it down as needed.
I did a back garden, took 2 attempts, but after a few days the effect of the first application was visible.

If you have Ivy or other wax coated leafs, crisp them with flame before application.


•Pool Salt 1/2 pint

•Water 1/4 pint. Then add more, as needed, to dissolve the salt.

•Distilled White Vinegar 3/4 pint

•Washing up liquid. 1/4 pint

•Citric Acid 1/4 pint. I make my own.

•Measurement device.

Don't know about sterilising for three months as new weed seeds will have blown in .
You can still buy 5 litre cans of a " roundup" type product from an agricultural / country store with no questions asked. That will deal with anything green that's there particularly if you mow first and leave it a couple of weeks so that the chemical is hitting new growth but you may have to hit it a gain after a couple of months to catch new growth again.
Just take into account that none of the spray products work at their best in cold weather.
An alternative may be to hire a propane burner, not a DIY thing but one with a metre wide hood and a couple of big bottles!

If you buy good quality membrane, it will exclude the light and all will die below it. It is the edges where you get problems. But i regularly spray the gravelled areas with glyphosate from local farm store, on any thing that hints on been green, its surprising how quick green stuff wants to appear in gravelled areas.

And if your doing 200m2 id suggest getting you gravel in 20 ton loads its far far cheaper

I'm far from an expert but I would use Gallup. Roundup was good but I have found it not as good as it was. You really should spray it twice, once to kill the established growth and the next time to get the seedlings. If your covering it over you may well get away with just the one application

Sad I know, but have not banned dishwasher liquid, yet.

Ammonium Sulphamate. Available on eBay, kills anything, bio-degrades in 6 weeks and is as near as damn it 100% environmentally friendly.

Please try to avoid Glyphosate as a weed killer (round up, ground up rodeo, etc) ...due to it's unregulated use its everywhere now even in our food and drinking water .... jeff...

Plus one on glycophosphate in my experience it's the only thing that works

I would go with Ammonium Sulphamate as per seadogs suggestion.

Its cheaper and more effective than Glyphosate. Needs fewer applications too.

Glyphosate's main advantage is that Monsanto have genetically modified certain crops to withstand it so ideal in intensive agriculture and lessens the need to plough in weeds.

Ive messed about with loads of different ones without much success. This year I painted some wood with Screwfix No Nonsense Wood Treatment. It was £16 but it must have been on offer as Ive just had a look and its £25 for 5 litres.
Anyway....I spilt some on the grass and its not grown back and that was April

I accidently sprayed my pond with ranch paint.........it killed everything including the Lillies.....its filled in now.

I use Glyphosate off eBay. Works great. I then burnt dead grass off with roofing torch. However 2-3 weeks later fresh grass is growing as it doesn't kill the ground.

if u buy the roundup from superstores ect its watered down. the proper stuff farmers use is concentrate
