i use an old freezer for storing flammable liquids in.

The older freezers & fridges have very flammable insulation in them. I have a few fridge carcasses used as cupboards, and one on its back for plants in the yard.

its not used for that hazard as its out by the hedge its purely used as a cupboard along with the old fridge @ home in the garden,interesting fact though!!

Many yearsago me and some mates set fire to an old fridge on the tip, i have never seen so much thick black smoke in my life, it was great!

An old TCT saw blade is great for tips for lathe tools, Cut the whole tooth off the blade and tack weld onto old lathe tool, grind to shape and use.

i'm amazed you can weld to tct.

Grandfather nearly got locked up during WW2 for black market building materials, until he showed the police his back garden workshop with firewood and packing cases rebuilt into toys for orphans.

Exactly that, only a tack or 2, let it cool before next tacks or you melt the tct off the tooth. I use 2mm stainless steel arc rods for this job.

I use take-away plastic cartons to store nuts, bolts, springs etc, when restoring old machinery, write on the lid where they are from, stops a lot of those scratching of the head sessions two years later when you come to re-assemble it.

Old margarine tubs for painting and brush washing.

I fasten the lids of empty plastic peanut butter jars to the underside of a shelf and then screw the jar to the lid. You can see whatever is in the jar at a glance. Lidl do a large yoghurt with a handle and resealable lid, my wife eats the yoghurt and I use the washed pot for paint, brush cleaning and anything else you might want to hang onto for a while.

That thing with the jars screwed to shelves? I went to visit a friends workshop and he had done the same, all his rivits, bolts, nuts etc were are nicely done, must have had 30 jars. Went to see him a couple months later and they had all gone, a slight problem manoeuvring a 6.1m length of box apparently.
Broken glass and a nice mix of fixings all across his bench!

My Father did that with a variety of tin lidded glass jars, just goes to show what dangerous lives we used to lead back in the 50's & 60's!

Good thread, don't know why I haven't read it before. It could turn into a really good longstanding thread.

As for myself, or should I say all the family. We don't throw anything away unless it's unrepairable, and then it's striped for usfull bits, or turned into something else.

I'll have to think on, as I've done many of those already mentioned

Been having a massive dung out in the workshop, thing is i got some steel plate, bar & rod & nowhere to put it! & it was too good to turn down.
Had to make room for it!

My dad had glass jars screwed to a shelf like that. Complete PITA. Unscrewing and screwing a jar to get a screw or whatever out; couldn't stand that. Mine are stored in see-through takeaway containers and so far I've resisted sorting the metric from imperial. We've got one of those label printers that print onto self-adhesive tape and went mental one day labelling them. Looks a little anal but the rest of the workshop makes up for it.

I don't often throw something away without taking it apart and salvaging little screws, bolts and what-have-you.

Be careful with the takeaway tubs, some don't like the sun and go brittle, it's always the one that's full of small bits that falls apart! As for anal labeling........


The tape for the old Dymo machine used to label these draws cost more than the draws.

Doing the above I was accused of being anal with the label machine, see below.....Calls himself a mate too!
