Anyone know what the recent changes in the MOT test are?
Always interested in knowing the current situation

Some things are now not included as fails but are minorsAm I right in saying that there is now Minor, Major & Dangerous? Instead of Pass, Fail & Advice
How people can think an engine management light is ok, Is beyond me! IdiotsMy beloved Chrysler Voyager jammed her gearbox yesterday (only 90k but luck of the draw with those Getrag boxes) and so was scrapped.
Need a new car so went to look at a Subaru Forester, get there and they casually mention that the check engine light is on but not an issue as it was determined to be an "inconsequential issue" by their mechanic and they had been driving it like that for a couple of years- they were unfortunately unaware that as of May that's an MOT fail and as the MOT was due in July I walked away. Glad I had heard that!

I get the impression you can't drive the vehicle home if it doesn't pass its MOT, Even if the previous MOT hasn't expired. You can drive to and from a place of repair/MOT without an MOT as long as it's booked.

The engine management light is on for a reason
That is terrible! As well as an MOT fail, it means you now no longer know if there's a serious fault. Was the car out of warranty? We had a Volvo 240 estate, bought new by my father in law, that cars engine management light came on when it was 6 months old & on & off for the rest of its life. Volvo never found out why it kept coming on & nor did anyone else. We called it the expensive light as everytime the poxy thing lit up it cost you £500 - £750. It did not matter what code came up, what sensor was replaced it always came on again before long. Volvos said in the end it was a glitch & to ignore it. Our mechanic who is a skilled diagnostic bloke with the best reputation for such things for miles never got to the bottom of it. In the end we stuck a bit of black insulating tape over the light so we couldnt see it. Sorted!
