Well... It looked like a job for MMA welding with 3.2mm route weld and capped with 4mm ironpowder rods to me! Low amp MIG tacking is more for rusty cars than watertight boats.

I think there is a chance it will be further under the water than the owner would like it to be.

There was a thread on here a long time ago, I can't remember many details but it was somebody using this method to repair boats, but where the metal was pretty thick as I assume this is too. Utterly stupid and completely wrong, if the metal is thick enough to do a proper run then anybody in their right mind would do a proper run.

We had a job came in last year, someone had welded a full length 12mm thk plate to the bottom of a beam - weld looked very similar. Concrete flooring planks had been put on it and the plate started to tear way from the beam. We brought it into the shop and a lad knocked the plate off with a sledge. Next to zero penetration.

My landlords built boats. They used 400 amp water cooled kemppis, pretty much on full bore, and it didn't look like that!

that really wanted spraying in with a big mig.
cant see how people can charge for that sort of weling useing toy welders. you chould do it running a 250A singel phase machene flat out but there would be a lot of tea brakes. but id be lookeing to use a machene capable of 350 - 500 A and probaly 1.2 mm wire

My landlords used 1.0mm wire and lots of amps, but not sprayed on because I could hear the sizzling from my workshop, with several of them going it sounded like rain lashing on a tin roof! Their hulls were used by a hire boat company, so they had to be solid to cope with the stag party renters ramming the boats into locks and crashing into things, an all too frequent occurence!

Assuming 6mm? or even 10mm plate thickness you would just blow big holes in the metal with that sort of raw power. Welds just become uncontrollable with two much power and you end up with a big slumped undercut bead.
Our sets are 400 amp, and one, I think, 500 amp. Rare we weld anywhere near the top end as even if you are welding an extreme of say 50mm plate, you can only lay a 10-12mm bead maximum before it starts to slump so you make the overall weld size up with a load of 10mm beads.
The benefit of the big machines is it will weld all day long without missing a beat.
