Rapid temperature rise causing rust - check your workshops!

Is there a consensus on an oil to get to cover stuff in in these situations? I had a rampage with some wd40 but feeling that that isn't enough. Like others the mill look like it had stood outside in the rain

Exactly. Thank the westerner's - all of our cast iron and stone has condensed out the majority of the wetness before it reaches more Easterly areas!

Unlike some other I’m not a great lover of acf 50 on the underside of vehicles to stop rust, it’s too temporary for my liking, however it is the perfect liquid for surfaces and tools in humid environments

That's mint compared to mine. I never get time to put tools away before the next thing crops up.

Actually I’m pleased someone’s workshop is worse than mine. My daughter poked her head around the door and exclaimed “You’ve had a tidy up.” I had actually had a little tidy up and she noticed. I might be untidy but I get stuff done. My neighbour (from hell.) is a hairdresser (barber) with OCD. I’ve only been in his shop once for a haircut. 2 hours! He’s slow, cleans and wipes everything after each customer, puts everything in exact order like Hercule Poirot and sweeps the floor constantly, and then went to lunch with customers waiting. I read all the magazines twice. He gets nothing done and is tidy, so I think I’ll carry on as I am.

Emptied about a litre out of the dehumidifier, but other than that, the doors been closed since before the freeze started and dry as a bone in there, great thing about being retired, no work and xmas shopping

As you will have seen from earlier emails we have experienced a freak of nature in the hub this evening with constant heavy and continuous rainfall from the beginning of the shift and the rain continues to fall.



On top of this the power floated concrete floor has sweated due to the sudden rise in temperature which has added more water to the floor making it almost impossible for our Forklift drivers to perform to anywhere near their best.



We have tried everything we know to improve the situation but we have been fighting a losing battle which has meant that the shift is running 2+ hours behind.



We completely understand the impact that this will have on your operations and ability to deliver some freight to service today.

Service failures will not be given today or for the rest of the week please recognise that we are all in the same position due to the weather conditions and sheer volume of water on the floor.

No problems here, everything has stayed dry. Shed is tiny, uninsulated but absorbs some heat from the house.

My unpainted lathe cover is a sacrificial item for the rust gods, Im yet to modify it so its not ready for painting. It seems to catch any moist air and rust before anything else.

I've just been out to check the garage. Milling machine was fine, lathe looked like someone had sprayed it with water. Think because its right up against the wall and a metal contact with the floor (milling machine is more isolated).

I stuck an electric heater on pointing at the lathe for an hour yesterday purely to warm the entire thing up and dissipate the condensation and then a dehumidifier as well to pull that moisture back out of the air again. Thankfully being an old British lathe it's self oiling but even so best not to be absolutely soaking wet.

Could really do with a better dehumidifier but even so it's still pulled a good 3l out since yesterday evening (single car garage so not exactly massive).

I left the dehumidifier running and it filled up over night. Yesterday it was in the high 60's in there today mid-50's. No more condensation apparent, I'm putting it down to a combination of the rapid temperature increase coupled with a heavily moisture-laden air. Nothing like this has ever happened before since I built the workshop in 2008. Next time we have a similar change in weather I'll be more prepared with the de-humidifier redy to go and I'll keep the workshop closed until the temps have evened out.

Even the garden shed has got condensation on everything, and that's just a feather-edge panel structure. Compost bags, plant pots, any plastic containers are all covered in fine beads of moisture.

As long as it's doing its job, it's fine. Mine iced up a couple of times over the last week with the temps, so I've got a fan heater in there just to keep the temp up a bit.

This is simply a relative extreme we rarely encounter, nowadays. Work around it if/when it happens.

Not nice, Brad. Is that 80W for the whole set of draws? 80W with, say, six square metres of radiating surfaces and air gaps seems to have been too much for the freezing temperatures, even in Essex. I think the dehumidifier in my workshop earns its keep.

Drawers are 2m wide a meter deep and meter tall. They have sliding doors so quite well sealed but not air tight.

i shot out today to look at a big wooden box full of different size parallels i have . fortunately sprayed them all 2 years ago and no rust on any of them. would have been gutted if they were rusty

Before I go de-rusting in the garage I have to figure out the electrical fault in there. Switched the lights on and the while house tripped the other day. Knocked the breaker off in the CU and thought sod that I'll sort it when the snow's gone!

It did replace 2 ancient metal florries in there with plastic cased ones a short while back. 2 more to do.

No doubt some tunnel bunny has chewed something!

Not necessarily. Could be moisture in the switch or lights.
