150mm diameter and ~500mm thick, I also got a quote of £150 from a core cut guy, but so far he is a no show. If he doesn't show up by mid week I'll have a go with my sds.

It's the same story everywhere. Nobody seems interested in doing anything, even if their ludicrous quotes are accepted. For this reason, I will be doing my own flat roof and I may hire a mini digger and have a go with the treatment plant too. I could balls the job up four times and still be in profit!

how wide is the opening, it looks too narrow for French windows? i.e to me anyway, double opening doors.
Sapele is a not a cheap wood so you are getting a premium product. (I noted someone else quoting a price for green oak doors but that is not a good option in my view as it is not seasoned and splits and warps as it dries)
At the end of the day it is what it is worth to you? Certainly alternative quotes are a good idea but only if like for like in quality.

Make sure the core is wider than 150 to allow for the ducting about 160-165 for a 150mm fan.
Just done 9 apartments for a builder and he told the corers 100mm was a nightmare.

the only reliable way of getting a decent tradesman, fast is being in the game. i can get plumbers brickies plasterers roofers and joiners etc at short notice

This is exactly why I wanted green oak. Our house was probably built in the late 1700s and perfect modern finishes look somewhat out of place.
There has been movement and I needed to plane the frame a bit to stop the door conflicting, but the movement has also made the job look in keeping with the rest of the place.
Again, I made the point twice that there should not be a direct comparison, and, besides, the wood cost for the green oak was a fifth of the total (ie the other costs would have been, pretty much, the same regardless of green or otherwise)

The opening is 1160mm from the outer edge of the existing window frames. These ones are just over a metre wide. Doors and glass in the price below.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you above. Do the off-the-shelf parts fit?
As in are they good for you?
If so, why not use them and save a load on custom building? You could probably get a door frame kit and fit the whole job yourself.
What's the wall made of anyway? I'm thinking if the numbers don't quite make up, then chopping about the wall, assuming the lintel is sufficient, is a fairly DIY job.

I didn't ask the joiner for custom made doors, I asked for him to supply and fit french doors. It's a sandstone wall. If I don't get a reasonable quote, I will do it myself.

The core cut guy turned up today, it took him just over an hour. He did a great job. The wall turned out to be 600mm thick with a keystone going most of the way through.

Thank God he turned up, it would have turned into a nightmare. Also the exist couldn't have turned out any better.
