Quote to supply and install french doors £4300

Just got this quote in, it seems to be reduculoisly high to me and doesn't include opening up the wall below the window. Any thoughts?

The doors will replace this window.

Proper wooden doors & windows are never cheap, if they're any good. Always worthwhile getting a couple of quotes though.

Also check their reputation.

I hate recieving quotes like that. Bugger all information as to what they're actually doing.


Get a few more quotes. Especially as that's supply and fit not the facilitating works.

You can hardly see what I'm on about but at the back of this shot is a door with two windows either side.

My memory of the figures was that the oak for the window / door frames was £250, the door itself (glazed, off the shelf) was £250, the glass for the three windows (small one over the door as well) was £250 and the labor from the joiner was £500.

Labor was cheaper than someone else would have paid as there is a social connection.

It's not the same job as you want at all, and the oak was green, but the total I paid was about £1250 (iirc)

This number for comparison. Again the jobs are not the same, so no direct comparison, only an indication.

Lot of trades taking the **** on prices ATM. Too much work and not enough trades driving it.
Shop around. If they were taking the old out prepping and installing I'd say that was about right but for making and fitting in a prepped hole they're chancing it.

Sounds silly considering I've had a quote to double glaze the remaining windows in my house (think it's 11) for £9.6k. Two of those are 12ft tall windows 12ft wide, another one is same height and 8ft wide. About half of that quote is a set of bifold doors 20ft wide for the dining room.

Admittedly they're PVC but that's installed and some of them are 40ft up some with no interior access.

I've called at least 6 joiners for quotes, all but this one failed to even get back to me. At this rate I'll end up doing it myself, you can buy a decent door set for less than a grand.

Probably find someone online to build to size and spec then install yourself.

when i had to change a door getting even upvc door was expensive for the right size door

i was looking around seen a french upvc door reduced 75 quid new b and q

spent the next day off building a false wall then fit the frame saved loads as time is my own
