On there we use to-set the tappets with a slege hammer and two open ended floggers, one with scaff tube on the end for the holder. Clearance was a flat screwdriver. If they were bit rattley you could adjust them at slow speed with out stopping. Rods were about 5inch diameter. Would run at about 20 rpm.

On 1960’s Vauxhalls it was recommended that you set the tappets with the engine running. Back then I had to set a few, & it seemed the only way to get them running right. It was easier than you imagine, but it did chew up the end of the feelers, Vauxhall used to supply a strip of the correct gauge feeler as a stores item if I recall, but I never used any.

Avoid Facom punches. They're soft as mild steel nails.

Bent the 2mm the other week doing nothing extraordinary.
Bent the 3mm today and managed to burr the end up. They seem to be some kind of tough steel but definitely not hardened.

Call me old fashioned, but I can't bear to use any adjustable that isn't a Bahco. Every single other adjustable seems to wear out faster, slip off nuts faster, and generally be a pain.

Seriously, bought direct and it was an excruciatingly polite transaction with a fast passage across several continents. It lives in the tray on the lathe as the jaws open wide enough to grip the chuck jaws for leverage when holding or turning the chuck by hand.

I’ve gone off Bahco adjustables, the quality has dropped to the point they’re no better than most competitors in my experience. The jaws just seem to bruise too easily.

I recently bought a Facom (chrome finish) and it’s excellent, and my Unior ones are good too so I’ll probably stick with these going forward (although I’ve no doubt Irega are nice as well).

I have 2 of the facom adjustables and jaws became loose and sloppy disappointingly quickly.
