If you notice although those gaskets are thinner they have thicker sealing rings built in and its these that seal...I think they compress better to form a gas tight seal than the thicker type that can hinder sealing if your faces are out so what you have now is a safe bet

Oil filter fitted.

Power steering pump seal was leaking, so out with the old.

In with the new.

Next I was doing a big tidy up of the total mess in the garage and incredibly found this even though I wasn't looking for it. It is the missing filter from the fuel distributer. Result!

Then on to a leak down test, all cylinders were around 20%, not great but what I expected given I didn't re-bore the block and use oversize pistons.

Next, checking the height/compression of the hydraulic lifters, the goal is to have the top of the tool in the middle of the pin groove. 15 out of 16 were good like this.

One was high, ie at the top of tool at bottom of the pin groove, when this happens you are supposed to put a thicker shim on top of the valve. I Have a few spares but none the correct thickness so cut up a Stanley blade to put under the shim to increase its thickness. I already have two others operating like this.

I lost the pic of the new shim but here is an old one that I found in the engine that is pretty much the same.

It looked like this after fitting.

All of these will need to be checked again after the engine has been run and they have a bit of hydraulic pressure.

The next job was to paint these parts but the weather forecast is bad and cold for the next two weeks.

So tomorrow I will start on the transmission.

If you did a dry compression test without the rings bedded in it's probably not as bad as 20% ?

Yes, I forgot that your are meant to have the engine is hot for a leak down test and once the rings are bedded in I expect it will be much better.

Transmission seals, should be an easy job? But on a 42 year old car.....

First step was to give it a wash.

This looks bad, stator shaft splines almost gone!

On the bench.

Marked the pump to bell housing orientation.

Bell housing removed.

Output shaft lifted out of pump.

Pump unbolted from bell housing. This is the O - ring I had planned to change.

Unfortunately the stator shaft is pressed in, I will need to do a bit of research on how to correctly replace. I found a price for the part from 2011, it was 48Euro then, see below. A quick check with Mercedes today, they now want 280Euro, rip off merchants!

Close up on the splines.

The mating splines in the torque converter are perfect.

Oil pan and filter off.

Some time later.........

"Hey Kim, it's time we cleared out the shed now the snow has melted......", OK Jim.

Wow, looks what's been in the back of the shed for the last 11 years.

Its cleaner than the one I washed this morning.

The spline is worn, but not as badly as the one above, so do I swap in this one or buy a new one?

I also emailed a couple of transmission shops and asked for prices for a new shaft, I'll hopefully get a response tomorrow.

Die grinder, wire brush and a corroded transmission, not for long.

Then painted these steel parts.

Un-peened the rear nut.

Special tool for removal.

This nut was on tight!

Rear seal came out easily.

New seals.

Then an hour on the old gasket...........finally it was done.

Shift lever reattached.

Post Brexit deliveries are taking a lot longer from Germany, I ordered this and a few other items from Autodoc back on the 13th Jan and it just arrived today. I wonder if it will ever gat back to the 7 days or so it used to be?

Removing the transmission front seal.

Fairly brittle.

Looks to be a couple of bearing/bushes to support the torque converter and drive shaft.

Fits together like this.

New seal back in place.

Transmission end up for cleaning of the underside.

All done.

That is all I can do for now on the transmission, once the new bearing arrives I will get it all back together.

On to the steering box.

The first task was to mark the position of the "play" adjuster.

Just enough space to get an Allen bit on to the steering coupler.

The drag link was already loose from removing the engine.

The nut on the pitman arm was not tight.

Ball joint splitter on the track rod end.

Arhhhh, my perfect paint!

The pitman arm came off easily.

Steering lock bolt ready to be fitted.

Cleaned up.

Ready to be stripped down, but I'd better check the instruction first.
