Proper plumbing

I'm working in a house built in 1839, pulled a load of lead pipes out and found a newspaper dated 1st March 1935 so they must have been wealthy to get indoor plumbing before ww2

Keeping the cast bath, it needs restoring. Removed the waste today and it looks like the lead washer was hand cut

I've removed the taps and they are being restored as well, previous plumber said you couldnt get fittings, he mustn't have been much of a plumber

Those taps were called "globe taps" & were still available when I worked for a builders merchants late 60's early 70's.

Lovely pics. Mum and dad have one like that - we kept the lead work on all of the waste fittings.

oh i agree but suspect he was after the bath himself to restore

lead washer easy enough to make again

those feet are getting rare nowadays

also notted bath is in really good condition whats inside of it like usual drip marks plug hole end

He was going to wipe a piece of pipe into the lead, guess he's never done it properly? I use 3/4 soldered tank connectors, perfect for cast baths.

It's getting a modern waste, overflow hole in bath already

I remember those at my gran's, they made a very distinctive whooshing noise.

There is an antique shop in Hungerford who seams to have lots of old taps and bath fittings.
They are always in poor state of repair. But the price he askes for is way way to much.

Nice one Kayos, you done well Many, many moons ago, I remember my good old dad trying to teach me to wipe in lead joints with a paraffin blow lamp It was pretty awesome to watch

These are going to an antiques place, I can understand people wanting original but not at an inflated price

i love seeing old stuff un-touched like that...compare all those pics to walking around the bathroom section at B&Q..have we really moved forward?

its only practice I used to watch the p[lumbers do them and sweat brass bosses in to hot water tanks and elecricians do lead joints on underground cables . I used to do them sometimes. l last time I did a lead pipe to brass then copper was a year ago for a plumber .he hadn't got a neoprene adaptor that fits over the pipe and held with a jubilee clip the job was miles out of town and 5 thirty at night so he was well pleased I could do it

we have but a lot of old skills are being lost and most now aren't interested in learning it

The blow torches are cheep enough to buy and restore.

Not at my local scrappy they're not. £10 a piece, dented or not. He's got a nice little Taymax and a Max Sievert with a wooden handle, but a badly dented tank.

I love a restored bathroom or kitchen with hand made panels, Not always the cheapest option but if it has lasted 50 years or more i think another 50 makes it worth it.
