The slightest change in material properties can totally bugger up production, causing wrecks, in the machines, and hence downtime to clear, possible tool damage, at the least cause slower machine speeds.

exactly this. My brother was European logistics manager for Crown Cork. He said that their 15 minutes checks meant every 20,000 cans! And the steel was brand new. Swedish I think.

I think it's a "repair" provided you replace one half before replacing the other half

You can actually buy a complete new cam for £80,000. Camaros, Mustangs, 55 Chevys, 32 Fords, complete sheet metal available for them.

I've seen it argued that a fizzy drink can is now almost perfect in terms of design. They can't be made with thinner walls nor lightened without them failing.

A book called Rust: The Longest War by Waldman is where I read about them. Interesting and irritating at the same time. The author called corrosion on aluminium rust too, and that's just plain wrong.

Indeed. I should of clocked on that that was a mispelling 80k is indeed expensive for a new cam thinking about it.

They've started holding four packs of beer together with flimsy cardboard 'frames' now. Twice in the last month I've carefully lifted my Old Speckled Hen off the shelf in Tesco, only to have it collapse and the cans fall out. And that's when you find out just how thin the foil is the cans are made of, the slightest knock on anything pointed and you suddenly have a beer fountain across the aisle.

So is a fizzy drink can a pressure vessel for the purposes of any regs?!

Honest wondering. They get transported all over and no one treats them like cylinders but they must have to withstand a bit of pressure I suppose. Dunno. Never thought of it.
