i have a tin that must be 30 years old , used it on a mirror cover last year still works fine, tin was new and had never been opened,all be it ,it took a hell of a stiring.

Moved onto high build primer...got a couple of sags that I will need to sort out. Remembered to clean the gun out...sludge problem appears to be solved 
. It's amazing...I cleaned it really well last time I used it but there was still a bit of sludge in it when I came to use it for the primer!
Forgot to filter the paint...will remember next time...hasn't been a problem but I do need to get into a good routine.
Decided to just do the 1 coat and let it go right off (given the sags!)...nothing worse than rushing the painting and then getting too much solvent eating through the layers!!...been there and paid the price on the MR2 boot lid so I'm just going to go steady on this one.

Cheers JP, yea I'm totally new to using the gun and compressor setup so definitely a learning experience....I'm very lucky I have MrC helping me out (he has around 35 years in the business!). The main thing is to leave things to go off properly between coats...at the moment I'm just leaving 24 hours each time. For example I put the seam sealer on yesterday underneath and will just leave it for 2 days before I paint over it. There is nothing worse than rushing and then getting a reaction between the layers!
I think the roof will need 2 or 3 coats of high build...same for the rear quarters. The boot was quite tricky to paint...it's a bit like varnishing a floor...you have to plan your route so you can paint your way out of the boot and therefore avoid scuffing anything with the gun or the hose.
I must say that the gun and compressor setup is just so much easier to use than rattle cans....I think its the control you have over how much paint you want. Rattle cans generally are either on or off so your only control is moving the can closer!

Got the epoxy on the floors....I do really like the colour of this stuff. Shame it smells so bad....I have to use a vapour mask!!
Will seam seal next...then probably just touch up the seam sealer. Will be using sound mats anyway so the epoxy is just to give it some protection.

I agree in part, that is unless you spent good money from a paint supplier. I just painted solvent based paint and 2 pack lacquer both from cans on the Triumph belly pan and the finish was awesome.
Cost me around £30 for 2 cans though!

Don't get me wrong...I think rattle cans are great for bits that can be painted in one or two passes....for flat car panels I found them very hard to keep the paint wet enough. For the MR2 I used rattle cans and it did come out really nice. But cost me a fortune as there doesn't seem to be that much paint in the cans plus I was buying custom filled cans from a paint supplier which I think was £12 a can.
Check this little gun out....I seem to be collecting vintage paint guns at the moment. The same people I bought the last lot from found a load more air stuff so I popped round there today!

The real issue with rattle cans is they are mostly thinners and the thinners are more inclined to react with the under-laying coats.
The amount of thinners can really help with getting a good flat finish.
I will admit I only use rattle cans for weld-through primer and the like.
Fair play to Exuptoy for getting results like that on the Daytona.
I wouldn't have even considered tackling something like that with rattle cans.

Cheers @Dcal check out the £22 Chinese R1 cowl I did last year, 3 stage paint, 2 x water based with a 2pack lacquer once again. You pull the pin in the base of the can to mix the clear and hardener and it stays useable in the can for 12-24 hours before it solidifies. Not cheap but well worth it. You can machine polish it in 24 hours!!!

No clutter at all...thats impressive stuff that it from a rattle can. I think with rattle cans you do really need to buy the top stuff....cheap cans will contain cheap paints and I've plenty of disasters on that front.
Dcal....I know exactly what you mean....my MR2 boot really went wrong in a bad way and I put that down to doing the paint coats too quickly. MrC my paint guru is all about letting the coats "off gas" to prevent reactions. To be safe I just leave things 24 hrs...much quicker than redoing everything!

Got another coat on the interior today after sealing the seams on Friday with Tiger seal. Must say it does look very nice....next job is to put down some sound deadening and then to get the wiring sorted out. That Jotun colour looks really nice....it's kind of a grey with a little shimmer to it. Decided I'll be leaving the underneath in epoxy....will inspect the car annually for any touch ups as needed.

Got busy with regular work...MrC has been busy applying primer...sanding...flatting...fixing...the usual stuff. The prep has taken quite some time but I think thats just the way things go if you want a nice finish in the end.
Today the paint went on the boot...looks really nice. Most of this won't be visible so we didn't do lots of prep...only 2 coats of colour too but did give us an idea of how the outside might go.
Fingers crossed next week we will be ready for colour on the outside too...most of the wet flatting has now been done on the read quarters. We're going to focus on painting the shell first and then MrC will focus on the panels while I work on reassembly.
It's quite nice having things move forwards even though I've been too busy to do alot of it myself (hence lack of pictures).
Over the weekend I'll deep clean the garage ready for the colour painting.

Pulled the masking off today and been busy sorting out the inner rear arches. This picture gives you a better idea of where we are at...most of the filling, sanding and priming is now done on the main shell so we'll be sticking the colour on next week I think (fingers crossed). Definitely making progress but still a very long way to go I think...
The roof still needs a few more coats of high build and some flatting but I decided to leave it until the car is back on the ground as it's a real stretch to reach it all with it up in the air.

Decided to compromise on the rear arches for now....stripped off any factory underseal which is close to the weld repairs and go over with epoxy. The bulk of the factory underseal is in very good condition with factory primer underneath and no rust so I've decided to leave it in place. I may strip it in future but for now I'll just refresh with some new stone chip....got to draw a line somewhere and this is intended to be a daily driver.
Chassis and underside will remain in epoxy silver/grey....arches will be in black.

Here are the inner rear arches...have stone chipped just the arch and kept the rail silver/grey. Felt a bit ott masking it off but end result looks neat I think so I'm happy. Can now stick the suspension back in there....fingers crossed the brakes stuff will arrive soon.
The person who is having the car didn't want the suspension pulling off and refreshing....bit of a shame. I think if it was me I would have done it and changed the bushes all round too but that's just me I guess!

Cheers JP...it's definitely getting there. I can't wait for the main shell to be painted so I can start reassembling. They are very simple cars inside so it "should" go together reasonably quickly I think...except for the usual delays reordering broken stuff of course.

When the wife had hers the inside panels and headliner was sticky where years of cigarette smoke had attacked the finish and broken it down. I used about 5L of standard thinners cleaning it all off then got a colour match in rattle can plastic paint from my local paint supplier and sprayed it all. It was mint when I was done.
I'd already done the roof and should have done the roof seal as it was a let down.

Cheers Exuptoy...Yea apparently other owners have had the same problem....I reckon it's a "feature" of the plastics they used.
This car had the inside spruced up but the second car definitely has this problem in spades. I think I'm going to go the same route and paint them to tidy them up.
