Right, the blockage is in fact a grub screw! Going by the pointy end its purpose is to hold the bearing housing in place.

Judging by score marks on the outside of said housing someone has removed it without backing off the screw.

The lubrication chart mentions 2 grease nipples.

1) Front Pulley Bearings. This must be the one on the top plate located on the top of the pulley

2) Bottom Spindle Bearings. This must be the one on the depth gauge bracket.

So the one in the casting looks like a non-nipple.

The blockage isn't a grub screw, it's two grub screws, one screwed against the back of the other, presumably to lock it in place, then the grease nipple is screwed in behind those.

This is the relative position of the backgear and 64 tooth pulley, before and after.



I've got the 64t gear slightly lower down so it meshes better. They're just resting on the bearings at the moment.

That's come up sweet as. The new alignment on those gears looks far better too.

I'm hoping to increase the clearance between the fibre gear and the top of the clutch, they were almost rubbing.

Got a new belt and some loctite to hold a new key in place to locate the driven clutch gear and the inner sleeve. Hopefully will get more done this weekend.

Any ideas on a way to lift and lower the head of the machine ? I know on some makes there is a rack along the pillar and a pinion on a handle to raise and lower it, i nearly got a hearnia lifting mine there a while back.

To raise the head up the pillar - put a piece of wood on the table and use the mechanism which winds the drill head / chuck down against the wood to lift the head - works a treat for raising or controlled lowering. I hope that makes sense?

It does graham , i was worried though that i might bend/break something, its a fair old weight.

I know what you mean - I struggled to lift mine without the motor, quill assembly or the internals fitted!

When fitting the head to the column set the tool tray to such a height that the head casting rests on top of it, then tighten the bolt that secures the head.

I think it should be OK - I'm sure I put more pressure on the system when drilling sometimes.

As RTB says - that tool tray is handy as a temporary stop.

Hi all
i can't believe it. I was looking around the other day trying to find a part for the drill that i've got in bits when i find that you're doing the same (small world) since then i've been looking every day and i'm desperate for some updates as i've not started putting it back together yet. i only wish i had seen it earlier it would have been a great help. as far as i can tell mine is exactly the same with exactly the same problems. the dog clutch has had a hard life no boubt from changing gear whilst running. you say you have a fibre gear but mine is white nylon and it was rubbing against the top of the dog. i have tried to get one but they are no longer available (gate machinery) so i'll have to live with it. here's a pic of mine keep up the good work RTB . i think i over di it with the vice
