that's a real good test fire extinguishers are thin and take some denting . I know of a few that are over 90 years old and still in good nick

Made by Hoval for Motivair so will have been top quality when new. Only unknown is if it has been frequently drained. That plug looks like its been put in with ptfe tape so good chance it will come out without too much of a fight. If that one didn't want to shift, can always try the drain tap connection.

It has a proper manual drain valve on it, with a push fitting for a line off to receptical, so I am hopeful it's been used.

hot air gun, give it a good roasting first, then decent shifter or spanner, it should shift easily enough. It doesn't need to be super hot either, just enough to soften the bond. On all the ones I've had, the factory plugs used a resin based sealant, so were solid, a good heat through and out they came easily enough. didn't even burn the paint.

Not sure how many garages actually have a WSE for their compressor receivers, though, in my experience barely any. Unless they're a really big outfit.

Never seen an insurance inspector do a hydraulic test on a compressor tank before.... endoscope inside, ultrsonic thingy waved over the bottom, thats about it.

Did see one get the forklift mast tangled up in the roof once though

Same with chain hoists, lifting slings etc offshore, some nob in safety management decided we would have them all sent shoreside to be sent off for inspection.....

We just ordered new ones every two years and scrapped the old ones. $100 for a brand new 2 ton chain hoist, it was barely more expensive than the inspection anyway.

Same with high pressure testing hoses.

If you do decide to pressure test it as said a strength test is 150%, to do this you would need to remove the safety valve, which isnt a good idea unless you have an adjustable one on your test rig. Id suggest a leak test to 95% of the maximum allowable working pressure, with water. Water is used as it has far less potential energy if it goes wrong, as its not compressible unlike air or a gas. So even at say 400 bar a water leak is fairly inconsequential during testing.

So new it was!

For every one like you, I bet there are 5 others who run forklifts without LOLER and compressors without PSSR.

I look after all PSSR inspections on our site, and yeah we never hydraulic test anything unless its had a repair or modification, OR if it's a second hand vessel of unknown provenance.

The cheaper, newer vessels made to the "SPV directive" all need an internal inspection every year though. The older ones made to BS 5500, every 3 years, provided no major problems are found. That's a judgement made by our inspection body I think, and written into their manuals as standard practice.

The other "get out clause" for air tanks - is site them behind a "blast wall" - lock them inside - and have a pressure gauge/vent valve on the outside of the blast wall. Some insurers will baulk at the idea of a "compressor house" - but they like the sound of a "blast wall" better.

Has anyone seen an air tank blow up?. I used to work on hgv,s years ago and we regularly had tanks rust through and leak but I've never seen one explode. And there is no testing on hgv air tanks some of which are at least 50 litres.

I suspect in all cases they leak before break, unless they have a significant material/weld flaw. The only other way would be to significantly overpressure them, but even then they would balloon first.

yep google all the so called tanks that have blown up and there wide open must have been filled with sodium chlorate and sugar then lit to get that damage

Dunno but it wasnt me, Didnt get a look in! Cant complain though, i think fondly of them every time i start my arboga mill, startrite bandsaw & harrison 140. All sacificed on the altar of new far eastern junk.
