Picked up an interesting little power barrow that i hope to be using soon, except its turning into another project already so here it is.
Left 03:30 saturday morning 925 miles later arrived home 21:10
Barrow promptly abandoned in the trailer till the morning, come the morning go to unload it and the wheels are locked up...
Jiggle the gear selector and there is that horrible soft shearing metal feeling, as you can see from the above picture a set of mole grips on whats left of the selector shaft got it out of gear, oh dear.
First thoughts are when strapping down the machine i pulled the skip down onto the selector, plus 450 miles of jiggling did something. It definatly wasnt in gear before i left Essex
Anyway, this is the beastie, not sure what the company is but it seems to be french, and made in 1994, practically brand new!
2 pins and the skips off, nice and easy, clear a hole in the garage and get it undercover to inspect the damage, not looking good. The way it split i thought it was aluminium, is actually steel.
Split the gearbox and was surprised to see it appears to have 5 speeds! also thought all the oil had emulsified, but as i later found out its bentonite grease.
Selector fork degreased and all the bits found, the construction is interesting, just looks like its pressed steel parts brazed to a shaft
Closeup of the bolt, after seeing the mangled bolt im guessing this thing already had issues, hole and shaft might of already been weakened by a severely cross threaded bolt.
Interesting thing about the gearbox, all the bolts are imperial so start doing a bit of research into the markings on the casing.
The next few hours were spent reading up on peerless transmissions, the 700 series that i have here is apparently very popular among lawnmower racers, never knew such a nifty little gearbox existed! The barrow also seems to have a 100 series rear differential and brake.
This information was a godsend as i was having visions of having to turn a new selector shaft and try to remove and braze the fork and quadrant to it, not impossible but a bit annoying.
found a few gear selectors kicking about ebay but most were in america, not very handy. Not sure how i came aross it but i found that German ebay had some and very reasonably priced, so some probably terrible google translate messages and i think i have a replacement on its way?
So gearbox disaster in hand, have a looksee at the engine, was told it ran a few years ago.
Drained this dehydrated pee from the carb, emptied what was left in the fuel tank and gave it a rinse. gave the plug a clean, fresh fuel a couple of pulls and it fired up no bother, so that was a nice surprise! something worked! although i was a tiny bit disappointing as i was eyeing up electric motors to replace the engine if it was goosed, but ill take the engine working.
so this is it so far, bit of a sorry state, took the gears out to clean out all of the old grease. Might replace it with an ep00 lithium grease, oil is not recommend as the case is not properly sealed.
So seeing as its in bits anyway i might as well strip down whats there and derust/paint it up.
the briggs has a little starter motor and that black thing in the picture is a little battery, its bound to be wrecked as its long been disconnected, but thinking on making a mount for a 12v dewalt battery. Easy to unclip and charge and its what i use, should have the oomph to spin a lawnmower starter?
So if the selector hadn't broken i probably wouldn't of bothered taking this thing apart, but seeing as i am its all coming apart
