Whom is paying whom here ?
If a sheep got out and wandered onto the roadway and caused the accident, payment
should be to the injured party, not the farmer.

In Scotland, if you hit a sheep, it should be reported to the farmer/police, or the tag details handed in. If your car is damaged, you claim your insurance.

Many places in Scotland, if you are driving on a ’country’ road, there is a high risk you are sharing it with sheep. And the sheep don’t need to pay insurance. Not the first time I’ve got stuck in my car, on a single track ‘dirt’ road while a dairy herd ambles either side of me, heading to the milking shed.

I was following a herd of cows one day, there was the herdsman up behind driving them on, talking to a girl in a white jumpsuit sort of thing. She was a bit up close when the cow in front lifted its tail & sprayed a jet of liquid ‘manure’ all over her! I felt ever so sorry for her & I expect the herdsman thought “there go my chances”

If it’s an unfenced road, drivers responsibility. Fenced road, farmers, they’ve failed to keep the livestock in

I basically wrote my car off nearly, twenty years ago when I hit a deer.

I didn't, I bought another identical car and rebuilt it.

Came home in works van, dragged deer out of ditch, took it to my friend, later, had much meat and paté.

Be interesting to see. I've just done a bit of searching and the only thing vaguely related was to do with the typical head shot not being safe. I.e. You have more chance of missing or wounding the animal thus a higher risk of tainting the meat because of that.

Physiologically speaking I can't see any reason why if it's killed instantly and gralloched quickly it makes any difference where it was shot. I know with a 300WM and a head shot there's not much need in bleeding the carcass...

A wounded animal releases stress hormones that prevent the carcass from setting properly, meaning the risk of food posioning is higher. The meat is also pale and soft (PSE - pale, soft, exudative).

Gut shot animals are similar, with the added contamination of the surface with gut contents.

Shattered bones can cause deep muscle damage and anaerobic conditions, which in the slightly longer term will carry the risk of botulism.

A well shot beast, through the chest. You’ll still get bone in the carcass, you can’t avoid it. The intestines shouldn’t be damaged but hit happens. Gut shot beasts shouldn’t be put into the food chain, they are high risk. My rule is. If I wouldn’t eat it, I shouldn’t expect anyone else to eat it.

We’ve had carcasses ex rayed, fragments of bullet and bone were found from one end of the carcass to the other. This was with ballistic tipped lead bullets. Now that we use copper bullets that stay 95% completely in tac, we don’t get fragments of bullets through the carcasses. Bone still travels though

Yup, I’m with you on this. Abattoirs do it this way.

In abbattoirs, there is legislation covering the stun-to-stick interval, partly for welfare to ensure the animal can’t regain consciousness, but also to ensure the carcass is bled properly while the heart is still beating. It’s 15 seconds for the domestic species, as I remember.

Wild game is different, of course, as someone up there rightly pointed out, you’re meant to reload and watch in case the animal startles and makes a run for it. In any case, it’s worth at least attempting to bleed the carcass by cutting the throat - in behind the jaw, and outwards. A bled carcass will ‘set’, ie drop in pH, and be all the better for it. Too much blood in the vessels will hinder this.

Just a note here....next week is the start of hunting season for deer (rifle season)
and some shops actually close down for the first day.

Second day is much less popular, and the hunters are back to work (90% of them).

I can look across the shop floor and 300' away tell you exactly that they are discussing the
hunt yesterday, and using their own body, to show where exactly the bullet went.....

Usually I see an index finger pointed at a rib followed by "It went in here, this rib exploded, and
then it glanced up, wiped out the right lung, and then came out here".

It’s a terrible place considering how much the members have in common. I don’t go on very much at all. Probably the worst stalking forum out there.

Anyway back onto the original subject. We've got a small bit of land in the Highlands where my grandparents lived. When my grandfather died we "evicted" the chap who was taking the proverbial with stalking access (took what he wanted and gave them half a carcass a year or so). He was the one who "butchered/ruined" the carcasses.

Anyway we became friendly with the neighbour so combined we've now got access to 10k acres to stalk over. Only go up once maybe twice a year when time allows to restock the freezer.

Usually he had some Austrian friends who came over during the tail end of stag season and went mad (again started taking the proverbial with his generosity). During COVID they couldn't come and he decided why not give the deer a break (all wild but he did look after them leaving some extra feed on the hills for them along with his sheep).

In 18 months between visits I saw the head of stag go up from seeing maybe a couple during the winter (it's not a good wintering ground for the stags, great for hind grazing though) to probably forty or fifty an outing. Hind population quadrupled.

So left unchecked the deer are a big problem. This ground is fairly worthless as agricultural ground. Half decent for grazing stock during the summer months and that's about it so deer are the only thing that tend to be there.

They're not helping themselves. Went along to some of the deer management group meetings and what a farce.

Our neighbour was laid into because he'd let his stock (cattle) back on the hill and it was being criticised because of eating the deer's food. Eventually after it died down Tommy replied saying I'm sure the **** that's coming out of the cows **** is doing more good for the ground than anything else. Was met by silence.
