Porsche boxster MOT fail

My elderly mother‘s 20yr old Boxster S which she has owned for a number of years has just failed its MOT after barely scraping through the last few. It has now been replaced with a Golf so is no longer required and she has asked me what to do with it. Is there a market for these as project vehicles? I‘ve scanned ebay and there doesn’t seem to be any non runners for sale / sold.

The specialist who looks after is thinks it will cost around £1000 to pass (needs new exhaust system and a tyre) however it would still be an elderly, slightly tatty Boxster S with a number of advisories so I am inclined to tell her not to spend any more on it and to sell it “as is”

These are increasing in price now, have been for sometime and a 3.2 S is very much worth restoring as it will be a future classic.

If that is genuinely all it needs to pass the MOT, one tyre and the exhaust, the car is worth at least 1500, maybe 2k.

Bear in mind that it is the more desirable S model, and it really is silly season on secondhand cars of all types, once done, cleaned up etc it becomes a 5 or 6k car.

Try Motorway for the best bid, you will be surprised. I know I was, they bid me more for the Skoda than I paid for it 16 months back.

There’s lots of exhaust companies selling on eBay, and a tyre doesn’t cost that much.
These cars have a big following and there’s always people looking for one as a project car.
I would suggest to the OP to get talking to folk on either Boxa.net or on the 911 UK forum which has a Boxster sub section.
Suspension parts can get a bit pricey especially lower coffin arms etc, big end bearings have been known to be problematic after 100K if servicing has not been done often, and then there’s the intermediate main shaft bearing issues. But it doesn’t stop people buying them.
The engine alone is worth thousands if it’s good.
How many miles does the car have?

Almost everything started to go wrong (oil leaks, suspension, brakes, electrics, hood mechanism, mysterious engine noises) and I found myself nursing it along the road. Not exactly the point of the car. It had full main dealer service history.

Like you, I was told how they're a 'collectors car' and will only go up in value etc. That only works if the value of the car increases faster than the amount you're spending on keeping it going!

In the 18 months I owned the car I spent over £6000 on it.

93k with full Porsche then VW/Audi specialist service history. I did use it for a day myself 12 months ago and it does go very well indeed still!

I do not live nearby so cannot do any work on it unfortunately.

Chuck it on Marketplace? You need a thick skin though to fend off the idiots.

Just expect to be deluged with derisory offers.

Absolutely, they can be a money pit for owners who can’t roll up their sleeves and do all of the maintenance themselves. The labour rate soon adds up very quickly, you only have to look at Porsche forums though and there’s loads of guys buying these old cars as a hobby/project second car, something to work on at the weekends in order to keep them on the road for a fraction of the cost.
In fact I’d go as far as saying that it’s the only way to go unless you’ve deep pockets.
