if an engines only a couple of hundred , and you can do the swap , its an engine swap .... either get it going and drive it as youve done the work , or get it going and it will be worth more to sell than it will be as scrap ,,, again it depends on the time you have and if you can work the spanners.

I changed plenty of engines, thirty years ago, when you could actually see the engine.... I don't have the time or the patience to attempt this one. Or the space, or the tools come to that..

Thats my fault for saying I like them in front of it. Most important part of bangernomics is knowing when its a lost cause. I dont know if it is that time or not, on this one though.

I changed plenty of engines, thirty years ago, when you could actually see the engine.... I don't have the time or the patience to attempt this one. Or the space, or the tools come to that..

Theyre not that bad to do, you can remove the front end easily, bumper headlights front panel and radiator, should see her clearly now! , put her up on stands, pull out the two drives ,(open the two bolts on the shocks instead of the balljoints as the wishbones dont freely move down, also theres two 11mm nuts on the long driveshafts center bearing) pull off the battery and induction pipes, loom , the 2 fuel lines, clutch cable , gear cables and vacuum hose. Off with the engine steady and the two mounts, lower it down on a jack so you can get a crane to fit in, and walk the engine and box out.

The only tools other than a 8-22mm socket and spanner set you would need is a 36mm socket for the drive nuts, and a torx/allen bit set like sealey ak 219 ,couple screwdrivers, a decent trolly jack , a pair of jack stands, and a engine crane.

Take the opportunity to fit a new timing belt and water pump, aswell as a new clutch and be sure you should get another 60k out of her without any big headaches before the belt is due again

Be sure to fit two new driveshaft oil seals in the gearbox anyway as theyre for peanuts off citreon and they really dont like being disturbed. Again do any dodgy cv boots now while the shafts are out.

Regardless of it being a 1.9td or a 2.0hdi they are streets ahead of most vans ten years newer in terms of running cost and reliability

I cant really say nothing as i had it but i was doing 70 when it did it with me engine just went bang and a shudder dipped clutch in fast whilst trying to get to hard shoulder fast

tried to restart at speed in a higher gear sent it straight through again

that was an hour worth of waiting and an engine change problem nowadays is you dont know if the new engine will pass the emmisions

so its fit another engine then get it tuned and tested to find a fail to take it back out and refit another been there and done that

That's very useful thanks. I'll pass it on to whoever does it for me though as I've got ten stoves to build and a plasma table to get assembled, running and cutting steel, which is a big and time consuming learning curve. ...

Its a very common engine, used in many Peugeots, Citroens, Fiats & Fords so you should get one somewhere. If they still have it there's a breaker over here with a very well cared low milage engine from my crashed 406 but I'm sure its gone long ago!

I use startrescue for breakdown cover. You enter all the details and they send the breakdown truck. Nowhere in the list of possible breakdowns is there an option for "the engine has exploded and will definitely need recovering ". So I waited an hour and a half and a service truck arrived, said "oh dear, it will need a breakdown truck, made a phonecall then legged it. Then the rescue company called to ask if everything was ok. Twice. They established that the truck was an hour away. An hour later...the recovery truck phoned...for directions, half an hour away. It's been kind of a long day really...

I would suggest a written off vehicle as you can pick them up cheaply as insurers write them off for anything these days, companies such as Copart have masses of sales and have plenty of vehicles written off for rear enders, one engine out and one in. Plus you can sell the bits you dont use to offset your expenses.

That would be great if I had somewhere to put it!

@Brad93 Did I tell you the horsebox broke down six times on the way home, two boost pipes =four ends, when it arrived at yours one clip was missing, fitted that before setting off, the other end blew off by Ashwells, just by Nicks tyres another hose blew off, then outside that big pub, then by the nuke bunker, then ..................... fitted three more new clips and it goes very well now!
