I made my first rocket stove today. Dead easy to make and a great project for welders of all experience. I'll give it a test run later and post more pics.

I made a 'small' one a while back to take fishing...just a few bits of 70mm box but it never ran right...once it was going it was brutal, but it was either chaotically nuclear, or barely staying lit...have been meaning to make a better one but as usual it never gets to the top of the list

im only advising you but i have the hotplate type

heating a larger area of pan using a wind deflector
secondary air input equals better flames preheated even better

your sticks are too big therefore not providing enough air movement

to a degree your pic shows its jammed full

to stop the tar effect allow just enough air into the wood chamber its stops the effect from happening

remember mines a bigger firebox

i had the same issue as i wanted a longer wood box like yourself what happens because the feedbox is close to the riser height it can back feed rather well this is whats happening with the smoke thats why its taring up

i drilled mine and then fitted a slot just to allow enough air into the firebox

preheated secondary makes it even better thats why we run it down the same side as the firebox it really makes the flames glow orange/red

As gaz says, preheating it would help.

So far so good,more to do yet , clean up welds with grinder,more to add to this yet

you want a higher angle than that so the wood slides down on its own as it burns up the sticks

no higher ignore the video 45 degrees dosnt allow the wood to slide down enough

remember its split sticks that your burning in these and they catch for fun

Working all good needs cleaning up at work ,and heat resistant paint

now close your feed door and take a pic and see how high your flames are

i prefer the circle rings but that inner one may cause riser issues as the flow of heat has very little to escape when a pan is placed upon it thats why i prefer to use a cross section with your outer ring

the cross section allows any pan to fit on it whilst the ring creates a wind proof area for the flames and any ash that fires up hits the pan and bounces back down again
