I saw some welding yesterday of similar stuff - rather large pipe. I think it's taking gas up and over the hill by me. The welder they had was impressive. I think it was a welder/genny combo bolted to the back of a Renault 4x4. Looked about 8'x4'x4' ish

is that the murphys boys over the back of the rogerstone bypass? drive past there every morning on the way to work, allegedly they are pushing the pipe under the bypass as we speak

thanks for that drains i know that some of this stuff must be helping someone ,just going by the questions that get asked. runnach i knew that i couldn,t keep up this deceit, any work i have shown is all welded by a single welder, alas not me. the guy in question is called flange jockey, tell the truth hes a bit of a pr##k, my name on the other hand is alan. honestly mate a guy on another board actually sent me a private message saying that i probably didn,t even weld the pipes i was showing, this to a guy he had never met so what did it matter, i obviously knew someone who did go figure. oz, rory give my regards to the murphys when next you see them. garreth thanks, as regards not being worthy pi## off. this is some 8" the difference in colour is simply down to the use of a gas lens. alan.

FJ, do you use an angle grinder to bevel the edges?

steve most heavy pipe, if we are doing a lot of it is normally prepped with a profile burner. im sorry but i have no pics of one in action, we use two types one with links and the type in pic one. some of the old school fitters prefer to prep with an 8" grinder, then finish off with a 4" and a polishing disc. these pics may explain better. f/j

as i said runnach, what does it matter. if you look at the left hand side on pic one lads you will notice that the bridge tack has left the landing untouched, that top tack is one of those i mentioned going overboard with, really a waste of time as i will be taking this tack right out, though these larger tacks do help with closure. these are all the same weld except for pic 5 which belongs to the same 4" spool. f/j

steve, i think ill stick to pics of my mother and children, even valdez would be hard pushed to match my two daughters, beauties. heres some 2g , if you look closely at pic 4 that is the same position as the filler wire in my approach at the bottom of a 5g butt. thats dipping down into the pool and moving forward, here its dipping across and forward, sort of explains why i prefer that larger gap. i have more on this butt ill explain later, thanks for your time lads, and ladies f/j

Fantastic work FJ, these tig welds are awesome. I was admiring your stick work earlier in the the thread. The ones with the peelers on the capping runs. Are these positional welds, or are you using a rotator and welding in one position? Also what size of rod are you capping with are they 3.2s or would you use a 4mm? Cheers regards James

thanks for that james, most pipes i show are rotated manually on rollers, any positional work i will have mentioned in each post, i have also found that 3.2 seems to be my preferred capping rod, though earlier on i was using 4mm. im not sure if i have posted any pics of this, i didn,t weld too many. heres a few more of that last spool, i know that a single cap on 2g is unusual, if its acceptable its my preferred approach on smaller pipe. f/j

Agrees with Woz, great thread showing quality work, i prefer the larger gap too F/J, nice to be able to slide filler easily between root gap, ensuring good root fusion and wedding ring to boot!

thanks for that arsonista, steve, wooz is right these fillers will never be seen i suppose a wide gap is what you teach the youngsters runnach, it really is a more relaxed approach than any other i have tried, heres a little more tig. f/j.
