Pillar drill on ebay

Don't know if this is in the right place, but someone was looking for a decent drill and I just spotted one on ebay. Working on an android so can't paste the link, but it's listed as "Progress 3 Phase Pillar Drill", my quotation marks. Backgeared, 3/4" capacity, looks like a bargain for someone, and could easily be changed to single phase. Warning to anyone who doesn't already know, these things are seriously heavy!

Yup, but of the three, only one is back geared AND sitting at fifty quid!

LOL. To be honest the back gear could be an added complication for most people. A 5 speed belt-change would be adequate for most purposes.

Maybe, but I always found the progress back gesr really useful as I could drill a pilot at five or six mm, throw the lever and go straight to 10 or 12 without mucking about with changing the belts :-) My meddings will do the same thing but tends to drop the speed far more. Fine if I wanted to go to three quarters but then I'd have to change belt speeds for the pilot. D'oh! :-)
The best I ever owned was an old startrite with an epicyclic reduction box, the gears always engaged beautifully without turning the belts and the reduction was spot on. I sold it because it was three phase and I only had one socket for everything. With 20/20 hindsight I'd have swapped the motor out for single phase. Numpty.

not if u want to drill any holes larger than half inch it isnt or use hole cutters .

Julian, thanks for the heads up, just had a great result, now just need to find bit more floor space now......

And it only 3 miles down the road from me...

Nice one! Isn't this forum brilliant? Three miles away you can make several trips to fetch it too, otherwise it's a four man lift and a bit van! When we moved ours, two of us tipped it over onto a block, then two more to lift the head, then the pillar and the base weighs a ton too!

Yup, it's amazing how often half an inch isn't quite big enough. I prfer morse taper drills to mucking about with a chuck anyway!

even if u have a 3/4 chuck on a drill .anything bigger than half inch and they sometimes slip and score the drills . u can get the taper.drills at autojumbles verry cheap

A back gear is a must for me, as is a morse taper. I have a meddings at the moment but have been thinking about getting something a bit bigger with a No. 3 or 4 taper.

It'll be a one trip pick up, fold up engine crane and a trailer or the firms pick up with a tail lift.

Moving equipment is never a problem with a bit of thought about it and some basic equipment.

Once I get the workshop sorted maybe I'II post a picture of it and some of my kit.

PS: Does anyone have a parts/repair/spec manual (photocopy, pdf, or a link) for this drill, please

The thing that worried me was the amount of backlash in the clutch, this is normal so I'd suggest twisting the chuck in the opposite direction of rotation before starting the drill - you only need to do this on the high-speed gearbox setting.

Didn't someone do a blow by blow overhaul thread for one of these at some point? I seem to remember loads of pics of stripping it down and refurbishing it. I'm fairly sure there's a company that inherited all the spares should you need it, but can't remember who it was. Found it on google as I recall.
