Pickup load liner

I thought it was about time I posted a project on here so here's one .

When I bought my pickup it had a plastic load liner in the back which over time got cracked, split and generally wrecked so I decided to make one out of 3mm aluminium chequer-plate.

Next project is a lockable box to fit in the back, just need to find someone to do a bit of folding for me .

Nice, a git to weld something with that much thermal draw, OK once hot id imagine hmmm folding in your part of the world I wonder who's Mr press brake in the west

Cracking bit of fab/weld work Wozz, weldings Sheeeeeeeeeeeite, you should have used a spool and gun hehe...........seriously, tidy job ma man!!!

Nice job I see the original was a genuine parts one that broke, I had a Aero liner in my Navarra that survived half ton marathon packs and 3 phase weldsets so could recommend the make.

When are you going for the rollbar with 27 spotlights on?

If it wasn't for my stupid mistake cutting two left side panels it would have been done from one full sheet so £130 plus maybe a couple of small offcuts to do the arch covers. Came in at about £190 + consumables in the end and I've got quite a few bit of plate left. Still far cheaper than buying one and much more satisfying. (No, that price doesn't include the lift-up cover! )

The first side I did was a right mess, I ended up going back over it with the torch just to tidy the welds up a bit, the second went a bit better which is the one in the pic .
I owe hitch a pint or two from last time so it'll give me a chance to sort that out.

I don't think carrying a ton of steel in it helped that old plastic one . I am going to get a sports bar for it. It had a carryboy top on it when I bought it but after taking it off to pick up that miller tig I've never put it back on and actually find it more useable without it .

Had to send the bar back I got for mine, it was designed to fit so close to the sides I would have had to cut the loadliner - checked with supplier and they said cut the liner too!

Hopefully mine will be ok as the side panels are fitted under the rail.
I'd like to make a gas-lift cover for it too sometime, might have to look at a few and get some inspiration.

Ultimate pose - lift the cover with a couple of electric screw jacks/actuators, just press a button in the cab!

are you and robotstar5 speaking english?....for us un-educated whats the difference between a sports bar and a rollbar?.......one of the fella's at work tied some wood to his "rollover bar" to take it to the recycling centre,forgot how high it was drove into the hieght restriction at centre bending tailgate and damaging roof £2500 damage (mostly paint work)

The over bed ones are properly known as sports bars, they're not strictly rollbars because they offer minimal protection if you did happen to roll over. We are talking the same things though .

Sports bars are normally just for show and somewhere to mount a few spotlights, then you find you can't get into carparks etc!!

Wozz do you have LSD on back axle?, Navarra did and it made driving in the wet "interesting" could slide back end in 1st & 2nd!

It has a difflock switch, pretty sure it doesn't have a lsd though.

No no, welds are fine Woz, just the odd area where you have to weld over the extra thickness caused by diamonds within the plate, even an old hand will have probs at these areas!

A very good job indeed.

Thats odd Gav, my boss has an l200, with 2 sets of wheels, one for summer, one for winter...

Smaller ones for winter, he reckons the spare tyre make the back end float if he goes through a flood

haha was going to ask whether you told everyone about that! anyone here NOT done that ever? i find myself doing it far to much.... measure once; cut three times


Ive seen the tray up close... its a very nice piece of kit... shame Woz scratched it all up lugging the man sized gas bottle over ot mine
