First time I went to live in the US was 99 - I was amused/stunned to see petrol was still around $1 a (US) gallon. But most gas stations had a ".9" screwed to the metal work of the price sign - the sign could only go up to 99c, simply wasn't space for petrol to cost more than 99c a gallon. They were replacing signs all over the place with wider ones.I remember when petrol was approaching £1 a gallon, and blokes I worked with saying that it couldn't go above a pound a gallon because the pumps couldn't work at costs over a pound.
Well, we all know how that worked out, all new pumps.....
Roll on a few years, when Katrina hit, gas in Ohio was over $3 a gallon - people were talking about selling their SUVs to get something more economical.
