....luckily I filled up at £1.50 a couple weeks ago. It's sobering if you're old enough to think in "old money", the first petrol I bought was about 70p a gallon, that would be about 15p per litre. With the rate at which the increases are coming it looks like we'll be at £10:00 a gallon for diesel in a couple of weeks.![]()
My first transport on the road at 16 was a Puch Maxi. I could brim the tank inc T2 mix for less than a quid and it would get me to work and back for over a week. It's sobering if you're old enough to think in "old money", the first petrol I bought was about 70p a gallon, that would be about 15p per litre.

I used to put 35p worth in a Honda C50 which would take me to college and back numerous times, and this was going thru the Dartford tunnel from Kent to Essex every day. It's sobering if you're old enough to think in "old money", the first petrol I bought was about 70p a gallon, that would be about 15p per litre.

That sort of frugality would not be allowed these daysMy first transport on the road at 16 was a Puch Maxi. I could brim the tank inc T2 mix for less than a quid and it would get me to work and back for over a week.![]()
Yes that garage is very much still in operation. It's just around the corner from where I work. I also went to Thurrock Technical College and road my Mobylette Motobecane (followed by an FS1E) to get there.I used to put 35p worth in a Honda C50 which would take me to college and back numerous times, and this was going thru the Dartford tunnel from Kent to Essex every day.
always got it from the Deneholes garage near Grays. the garage seems to still be going to this day.

I used to commute into London everyday on my RD125LC back in the 90's, I think a tank would just about do a week back then.
AHH the smell of fully synthetic two stroke in the morning...
But how much were we all earning when petrol was 4/11 (whatever that is) a gallon (whatever they are)?I started driving in 1967, passed my test February’68 & petrol was 4/11 a gallon, 4 gallons for a pound & 4 pence change.
In 1983 at 16 I was on £25:00 a week. But how much were we all earning when petrol was 4/11 (whatever that is) a gallon (whatever they are)?
