Petrol stations? I remember those!

Said to the missus about the biggest issue I have with this EV. Say I come home one day and my daughter at uni suddenly phones with a life or death emergency. If I'm down on charge I can't just jump in and fill up en route as rapidly as with petrol / diesel.

I have always understood that uk refineries are optimised to produce petrol whereas those in europe are the reverse. Also I think you get more gallons of petrol than diesel per barrel of crude, but someone will be along with the numbers.

I asked someone that worked as a chemist in that field, and they said that you can alter or slide the ratio
of gas to diesel from a barrel of crude somewhat, but yes, there is some ratio.

I do know Pennsylvania crude was used for lubrication, whereas Texas crude was for fuel.

Modern techniques like Hydrocracking have opened up most all crude oil's to many uses (or so says Pennzoil)

When I set the above linked to Pennsylvania, I got $5.49 a gallon give or take.

I can never understand why diesel is more than petrol. Isn't diesel a by product of refining oil into petrol?

Diesel was deemed more harmful wrt particulates in the exhaust gasses at the time so a differential /penalty was added to nudge diesel car owners s to move to " Cleaner " petrol cars . But IIRC it back fired so the exchequer lost money on it ..

A lot of people worry about that even though it a very rare event .
We plug in as soon as we get home and the supply company snipe power for us till the overnight rate applies or we drain the power wall if we go for the charge now .. quickly option .

The only time I've had any sort of emergency in eleven years with EV's was when my pa's brother rang me just turned midnight , pleading with me to drive 44 miles to pick his brother Vince up and take him to hospital 20 miles from the farm ,as the Ambulance service said it would be at least six hour before they could manage it .

Vince sounded to be in very very bad way s, o I power mode drove to the farm got Vince in the car with the help of his brother and then to hospital . Vince was admitted straight away and spent the next nine days on drips being treated for sepsis .

I had six miles left in the can and had a squeaky bum time as I drove 4 miles to a charging place where it cost me some thing like £32 to half charge the battery enough to get home .

With a bit more though I should have taken Alison's Outlander PHEV , but I find it not so good for my disabilities to drive it .

Similar for me in the 70's and once passed you could ride unlimited capacity

yep..passed on my RD250 in the 70,s aged 17 and went out and bought a GS1000

Which is a total " Urine extraction" since tge rigs are 40km offshore and the refinery is outside of town. Its cheaper to buy Norwegian petrol in Sweden.

So could I….but what really boils my urine ….two garages, same owners, same fuel brand, 15 miles apart, both close to main routes….same price you would expect, no 10 difference in diesel. The higher priced one only has 1 garage competing, the other 3 others.

I think 1 USA gallon is about 3.8 litres. We are paying £1.45 per litre...so about $7.40 per gallon.

....I was expecting the difference to be bigger so maybe I got my maths wrong.

I think they said its a third of the total reserve and it's 4 days worth of oil. So it's basically a drop in the ocean and they have 8 days worth left. It's hard to see it having any effect at all tbh.

I agree a political move rather than a solution. The real solution to fluctuating oil prices caused by a bottle neck is to transition away from reliance on middle eastern oil. More oil from outside the region, more nuclear power, more use on natural materials not reliant on oil to produce.

So Im off to build my wind powered wooden boat, and weave some wool and jute clothes….its the future!

To say any more would get political so I won't. My house is heated entirely on wood and anthracite. The oil boiler is connected but we never use it. The cottages use oil boilers though so we could just stop taking guests but thats going to hit us as hard as the oil price increases as to run this place we really need a throughput of visitors!

With the rising fuel prices you will get less tourists anyway, to be honest weve noticed a fair change in booking behaviours this year due to a shortage of spare money in folks hands anyway. So you could bin off tourists, long term let your cottages, to help the housing crisis, then the tenants would buy the oil, no cleaning, gardening or changeovers, its a win win. Money in the hand at the end of the day would be less, but probably not that much. And as a bonus if the tenants are in receipt of benefits, you may end up with free heat pumps and solar too.

Now I need to go and dip my heating oil tanks, then go out get 40 litres of petrol for the quad in jerry cans and fill my pick up with diesel, which banks are offering the best loan rates this week!
