Hi Darren,

Yeah I totally understand the differences of the DIY/Hobby market to the Proffesional/Industrial market. If your only going to use something 1 or 2 times per month and have a limited budget then it makes perfect sense to check out all of the cheaper avenues first.

Like I said earlier, not everything out of China or India is bad. They make some bad stuff but also some plants produce some good stuff. Its horses for courses really.

Lorch don't sell direct, only via distribution, after all, its these guys who can offer local support. I would be happy to point you in the direction of some of our sales partners and make sure that you get a great deal. I think that you would be surprised by the prices anyway, there's not a huge difference on the small inverters and 230v mig prices. Its only the bigger more high tech stuff like the pulsed migs etc which are "small car" money.

It's as bad for a hobby welder to have a breakdown (not financialy, but in annoyance). If you are working during the week and welding at the weekends then a breakdown on a Friday is a real pisser. Just have to knock around at the weekend rather than get on with stuff.

I had a breakdown and lost one weekend. New parts arrived during the next week, I screwed them on, and was up and running before the following weekend.

Support gets really important even for the DIY types.

Your right Avenley, it wasn't that great. 3 yrs ago we started Lorch UK, and we currently have about 20 dealers in the UK, there are still some areas where we don't have any coverage, but that's changing rapidly. The worst thing that we could of done is to set anyone and everyone up as a dealer and then get a bad name from poor after-sales care. That's why we are taking a more targeted approach and only appointing quality dealers. Takes a little longer, but I believe its the right way.

Yeah INE is a good brand, esp the stepped voltage mig range.

I have tested, repaired, and overviewed many welders in China from almost every manufacturing facility you can think of. I mean I have seen some very scary stuff from the chop shops of welding companies in CHina. Examples are Duct tape for connecting wires, exposed wires, water cooled tig torch lines inside the welder the were not tightened so when the rush of water comes and meets the electricity boom. I have used some very impressive welders from China that would make any veteran say WOW. I have tested an Ac/Dc welder from a massive top 2 manufacturer against a Kemppi Ac/Dc and i kid you not the Chinese welder did the same tig weld job at a mere 190amps that took the Kempii 250 amps to accomplish the same weld. I mean 99% of the welders from China are low budget copies but there are the 1% that really can impress an amateur to a novice. One thing i would mention to anyone who is going to purchase a chinese welder, is to stay away from the super160p and all the other other super series welders because those machines are the most unstable machine coming out of china bar none.

noticed lorch did some nice machines the saprom s8 looks real nice 500amp digital pulse mig, serious duty cycle. down to a little 140amp carry stick inverter that weighs 4.5kg with 30% duty cycle. Thanks, our website is under construction at the moment so the one you see there is not great, but it still shows a bit.

We have "The book of Welding" a hard back book which has some process knowledge inside (Tig,mig,mma) etc but its also a product catalogue for our Semi -Pro kit. It also explains the difference between A,B and C brand quality equipment. (Western european, Eastern European and Far East manufacturers)
