Painting galvanised railings ?

So made a set of railings ( mild steel ) and the chap wants then galvanising then painting black, Is there a best treatment to go for to do and best procedure ?

If i ever get my own job back yet from the galvanisers that is, been three weeks and they say its a back log

I've painted a fair few with high build vinyl and it's a good job straight onto fresh galv.

Looks like i will be going with HB Vinyl then,

easy and found its not the expensive say £60 for 5l

Looking at the Paints4Trade website, there's no tech datasheet nor a SDS for that paint. Seems that you have to go to the Manor Coatings website to get those. The SDS says it contains 2-10% zinc phosphate (ZP). My impression was that, in the past, most ZP primers only contained 1% ZP, but looking at a number of paints recently, quite a few (the majority?) are now quoting figures of 5-10%. Presumably this is good, as the ZP is consumed in order to inhibit corrosion over a long period of time?

I guess that when used on a galvanised metal, the ZP content is less important.

I'd stick with the Manor coatings hybrid. The quality is consistent. A lot of the other stuff is being made down to a price and is very apparent!!
Hy build, not hybrid. Damm phone.

I wonder if that Manor coatings hi-build would do a good job on the underside of a car? For the past ~12 years I've been using Johnstone's zinc phosphate primer, but that is only 1% ZP, and I'm beginning to think there could be other things worth looking at.

Why choose Jotamastic for a car but not the railings? Are any of the Jotamastic paints zinc phosphate inhibited?

Get the wrong coating/conditions and the paint can peel off in sheets with white zink oxide underneath driving the unsticking of the paint layer. Especially prone in salty conditions.

Hope it's OK to pick up on this thread, since the question is almost the same as the one that I was going to ask, but possibly about a different kind of railing.
I'm also looking at a post and wire railing for my decking, and would appreciate some guidance on material and coating/finish choice.

The result I am aiming for is essentially the same as in this video:

However this guy finished his with 3 coats of rustoleum, which might be fine for somewhere the mid-west far from the sea, whereas I am a mile from the Cornish coast.

So, I'm wondering if I should go with mild steel and with prime and paint myself, or get them galvanised and painted (sounds like Manor HB for that), or powder coated or something else? Another option could be stainless, but I do rather like the matt black finish.

Depends on your budget - small galvanising jobs can be expensive assuming you can find someone to do it in your part of the world. I use a 94% zinc paint (it’s called pâté here and has the same consistency!) topped off with a couple of coats of undercoat and then topcoat.

Fully agree with @..

Epoxy primer and a decent top coat should last 20 years on mild steel and far longer over galv.

Prep is important and blasting (Sa2.5) will give best results but mechanical prep (ST2 or 3) will suffice.

Jotamastic 90A will give better protection direct to steel but straight Jotamastic 90, 87 or 80 will provide many many years of service.

I’ve only ever used T wash,leave for 40 minutes,or until Galvanised goes blackish,rinse ,then when dry a regular type pain,next day it’ll be rock hard and your thumb nail won’t mark it.
